  • Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies

In this groundbreaking work, evolutionary biologist Jared Diamond stunningly dismantles racially based theories of human history by revealing the environmental factors actually responsible for history's broadest patterns. It is a story that spans 13,000 years of human history, beginning when Stone Age hunter-gatherers constituted the entire human population. Guns, Germs, and Steel is a world history that really is a history of all the world's peoples, a unified narrative of human life.

This book is very good. The subject matter is contested in some circles, but it is very thought provoking. I'd recommend reading the book rather than listening as some passages will have you hitting the reverse button on your player.

Every time Bill Bryson walks out the door, memorable travel literature threatens to break out. His previous excursion on the Appalachian Trail resulted in the best seller A Walk in the Woods. Now, we follow him "Down Under" to Australia with this delectably funny, fact-filled, and adventurous performance that combines humor, wonder, and unflagging curiosity. More from Bill Bryson.

If you listen to this book on headphones on an airplane (as I did), you will disturb other passengers when you laugh out loud. Funny and informative. As with all his books, he mixes personal experience with well researched facts and insights. It is always a treat to listen to Bill Bryson narrate his own work.

I love reading Bill Bryson and it is a treat to hear him narrate his own book. He is very funny and the book is filled with interesting facts and observations. If you listen to this on headphones in public, people will stare at you when you laugh out loud.

The murder of Abraham Lincoln set off the greatest manhunt in American history, the pursuit and capture of John Wilkes Booth. From April 14 to April 26, 1865, the assassin led Union cavalry and detectives on a wild 12-day chase through the streets of Washington, D.C., across the swamps of Maryland, and into the forests of Virginia, while the nation, still reeling from the just-ended Civil War, watched in horror and sadness.

A well researched book with loads of detail that appears to stick to the facts and avoid speculation. It is also written in a manner that compels the listener to find out what happens next. It gives us a glimpse of what post revolutionary war Washington DC was like. Richard Thomas does a great job.

We're living in the midst of a scientific revolution that's captured the general public's attention and imagination. The aim of this new revolution is to develop a "theory of everything," a set of laws of physics that will explain all that can be explained, ranging from the tiniest subatomic particle to the universe as a whole. Here, readers will learn the ideas behind the theories and their effects upon our world, our civilization, and ourselves.

This is a very good book. I thumbed through a friends copy, but didn't have time to read it. It is tough, however, to listen to. The subject is dense. I have a graduate degree and accustom to tough subject matter, but this book begs to read in a non-liner fashion (no pun intended). You need to skip back to previous sections. Also, some of the content is in table form, which doesn't make for good listening.

The fidelity of sound is not that good. The introduction from Audible comes through clearly, but when the book is being read, the volume is low and not crisp. Makes it very difficult to understand the words.

very funny stuff, but I had a hard time getting past the extreme use of the "f" word. I should expect this from George. Don't get this if you are easily offened. On the ohter hand, maybe you should, this will give you something to be indignant about.
