At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than “an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise.” But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone.

    Story

Not your average memoir. I lost myself in this story and still haven't come out. I went and read the whole book in hard copy after listening to it during a long drive across country. Strayed writes about herself and her life without a shred of self-consciousness, and it's lovely.

Bo Mason, his wife, and his two boys live a transient life of poverty and despair. Drifting from town to town and from state to state, the violent, ruthless Bo seeks his fortune in the hotel business, in new farmland, and, eventually, in illegal rum-running throughout the treacherous back roads of the American Northwest.

The story is based on Stegner's family settling in the West; it's beautiful writing and moving. Mark Bramhall's narration is note-perfect.
