Russo's protagonist is William Henry Devereaux, Jr., the reluctant chairman of the English department of a badly underfunded college in the Pennsylvania rust belt. In the course of a single week, Devereaux will have his nose mangled by an angry colleague, imagine his wife is having an affair with his dean, wonder if a curvaceous adjunct is trying to seduce him with peach pits, and threaten to execute a goose on local television.

Jeffrey A. Sherman says: "Shockingly good"
    "not his best"

Having read Empire Falls and Nobody's Fool before listening to this book
I would reccomend one of those two first. This book does create memorable characters but I came away with the impression of a kind of mid-life crisis book. I really enjoy this author. This is not a action oriented book but is worth listening because of his strength as a writer.

Late one night, exploring her father's library, a young woman finds an ancient book and a cache of yellowing letters. The letters are all addressed to "My dear and unfortunate successor", and they plunge her into a world she never dreamed of: a labyrinth where the secrets of her father's past and her mother's mysterious fate connect to an inconceivable evil hidden in the depths of history.

John S. Atherton says: "I give the book a five but I won't buy it..."
    "Very enjoyable"
    Overall

This was a great listen and the story had creepy moments. I wonder if there is a trend to use more than one narrator as it seemed awkward in a couple spots. Also I hope the use of music in these books doesn't become more prevlant. I generally look for longer books and this book was well worth it even though I wouldn't have chosen this title I'm glad it was recommended to me.

In his eagerly awaited fourth novel, New York Times best-selling author Nick Hornby mines the hearts and psyches of four lost souls who connect just when they've reached the end of the line.

Julia's aunt says: "Seems made for audio format"
    "great use of voices"

Having a different actor for each character really added to this story which was very enjoyable. A lot of humor in the story in fact the most since Nobody's fool. You will not be disapointed in the audio.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Never before has an author’s narration of his fiction been so important to fully grasping the book’s impact and global implications. Taking us from Afghanistan in the final days of its monarchy to the present, The Kite Runner is the unforgettable story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. Their intertwined lives, and their fates, reflect the eventual tragedy of the world around them.
