In an eloquent, mesmerizing voice, Mikal Gilmore weaves us through generations of his family's history to uncover the sources that led Gary Gilmore to murder, and the crippling aftermath of Gary's deed on his family. A vital and deeply American story, Shot in the Heart raises many compelling issues of concern in a country that grows ever more violent.

I've listened to this audiobook 3 times already. It's fascinating and sad. I wish there was an unabridged version.

It was a crime of senseless violence. On a cold night in a remote Swedish farmhouse, an elderly farmer was bludgeoned to death, his wife left to die with a noose around her neck. As if this didn't present enough problems for Ystad police inspector Kurt Wallander, the dying woman's last word, his only tangible clue, were foreign. If publicized, they could be the match that would inflame Sweden's already smoldering anti-immigrant sentiments.

I've already listened to it twice and I just got it last week. Full of interesting little details and a great main character. Wonderful quirky narration. I appreciate that the crime investigation meanders a bit. The imagery of the Swedish countryside was beautiful. I'm planning on listening to all this author's books.

  • Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 37 mins)

At the core of this book is an appalling double murder committed by two Mormon fundamentalist brothers, Ron and Dan Lafferty, who insist they received a revelation from God commanding them to kill their blameless victims. Weaving the story of the Lafferty brothers and their fanatical brethren with a clear-eyed look at Mormonism's violent past, Krakauer examines the underbelly of the most successful homegrown faith in the United States, and finds a distinctly American brand of religious extremism.

Elysabeth Cummings says: "Interesting @ arm's length"
    "Fascinating"

Excellent writing and narration. Sometimes a littled too detailed. My only reservation is that the author definately has a strong point of view toward the Mormon religion. I'd like to hear an opposing viewpoint. But a definate must-listen.

In December 1989, in upstate New York, Gary C. Evans, 35, a master of disguise and career criminal who had befriended David "Son of Sam" Berkowitz, began weaving a web of deadly lies. Evans told a female friend that Damien Cuomo, the father of her child, had deserted her. Of that he could be certain, since he'd killed Cuomo.

    Overall

This is the first time I've written a review, but I feel compelled to save others from wasting precious hours...

The story in this book might be interesting, but the writing and narration are tedious and dull. The author feels the need to give every detail of every conversation, real or imagined.
