"Gold Plated Oldie"
This gripping story is both a history of an era in the US and an excellent character study of people living during this era. I found it impossible to put down! The good, bad, and blind in people's visions and actions are brilliantly depicted along with the steady and intelligent wisdom of the faithful Chinese savant/servant.
"Novel of a dysfunctional family"
While it is interesting, it is way too long, laced with barely believable language, incidents and encounters.
"Easy to Put Down"
This is the very first book that I have not finished! It is very shallow, uninteresting and just a trivial book. Forget it!
"Living history!"
This is not a happy story, but an important part of history that should not be forgotten. It is beautifully done in this version and makes the dark days it depicts etched vividly on the reader's memory. A wonderful way to recall past cruelty in the hope that it never returns.
"The best book I have listened to!!"
This is a book to be heard rather than read! My daughter had read it and when I extolled the beauty of the audio version she agreed to listen to a bit and ended up listening to the entire book! The story is lovely, gripping, and poignant. I will not see the movie as my mind's images from the audio book are too vivid!
"American History made alive!"
This story of the great dust bowl years and the devastation to the land and people's lives is an important part of American history. It is beautifully detailed and brought to life in a remarkable way that makes a gripping tale. It should also be seen as a cautionary note for our times as we lay waste to parts of the earth.
"Incredible, uplifting, gripping!!"
This is a true story of a man's life and struggle against the odds in WW-2. His refusal to buckle in the face of unspeakable cruelty and the aftermath it caused in his life is a testimonial to strength of character and superhuman determination.
