When Genius Failed is the cautionary financial tale of our time, the gripping saga of what happened when an elite group of investors believed they could actually deconstruct risk and use virtually limitless leverage to create limitless wealth. In Roger Lowenstein's hands, it is a brilliant tale peppered with fast money, vivid characters, and high drama.

If you could sum up When Genius Failed in three words, what would they be?

    What a mess!

Who was your favorite character and why?

John William Meriwether was my favorite character because his portrayl within the book as the most sensitive and rife with Greek tragedy. (For those options enthusiasts reading this, the pun was absolutely intended!)

The reading was crisp on the ear and very easy to listen to.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Um, it's about bankers. I cheered when they went down in flames!

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared.....

Seventy years ago, the interstellar supercarrier Ark Royal was the pride of the Royal Navy. But now, her weapons are outdated and her solid-state armour nothing more than a burden on her colossal hull. She floats in permanent orbit near Earth, a dumping ground for the officers and crew the Royal Navy wishes to keep out of the public eye. But when a deadly alien threat appears, the modern starships built by humanity are no match for the powerful alien weapons.

Would you try another book from Christopher G. Nuttall and/or Ralph Lister?

    Probably not.

Would you be willing to try another book from Christopher G. Nuttall? Why or why not?

    Possibly.

What does Ralph Lister bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The story is not particularly compelling, the characters one dimensional and the dialog is at times trying. Ralph Lister does a superb job of reading what would otherwise be a rather uninspired experience. He manages to bring life to a few of the characters, making the read more enjoyable.

Could you see Ark Royal being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Perfect for a television series on the SyFy channel. I can't imagine a known celebrity signing on, though.

    Any additional comments?

    Basic space opera.

In that first volume, we were introduced to the remarkable world of Roshar, a world both alien and magical, where gigantic hurricane-like storms scour the surface every few days and life has adapted accordingly. Roshar is shared by humans and the enigmatic, humanoid Parshendi, with whom they are at war.

Mark Twain once observed, "A lie can get halfway around the world before the truth can even get its boots on." His observation rings true: urban legends, conspiracy theories, and bogus public-health scares circulate effortlessly. Meanwhile, people with important ideas (business people, teachers, politicians, journalists, and others) struggle to make their ideas "stick". In this indispensable guide, we discover that sticky messages of all kinds draw their power from the same six traits.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

The answer is yes, but only if to someone who is interested in marketing or learning to persuade others.

What other book might you compare Made to Stick to and why?

I have read or listened to so many business and marketing books that after awhile the concepts get repeated and repacked enough that it is hard to separate what came from where. I find myself thinking about Cialdini's books and various copy writing books by Dan Kenney and others when I listen to this one.

    Which scene was your favorite?

Scene? The story about the ice bath and the kidney thieves stands out most in my mind at this point.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Discover the Magic of making something compellingly memorable.

    Any additional comments?

This was certainly a worthwhile listen and helps the reader (listener) evaluate how they might better communicate a message so that it stays with and persuades their audience.
