  • The Areas of My Expertise

In the great tradition of the American almanac, The Areas of My Expertise is a brilliant and hilarious compendium of handy reference tables, fascinating trivia, and sage wisdom on all topics large and small. Although best sellers such as Poor Richard's Almanack and The Book of Lists were certainly valuable, they also were largely true.

"Good for a few hearty laughs."
    Overall

I can see how some people love this book, and some people hate it. You really need to appreciate John Hodgman's dry sense of humor to enjoy this book. I thought it was alright. Definitely good for a few hearty laughs. I would probably enjoy Hodgman's wit more in smaller doses, like in a weekly blog or podcast. This book couldn't keep my attention for long stretches at a time.

Thousands of autonomous computer programs, or daemons, make our networked world possible, running constantly in the background of our lives, trafficking e-mail, transferring money, and monitoring power grids. For the most part, daemons are benign, but the same can't always be said for the people who design them.

Erica says: "Possibly The Best Techno-thriller Ever"
"Great thriller for anyone interested in tech"
    Overall

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. A thrilling story that kept my interest the entire time. The whole book is based around computer technology, which made it great for a geek such as myself. But I think Suarez did a good job explaining the computer lingo in a way that even someone who is not technologically savvy could understand. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes thrillers, but especially to people interested in tech.
