This is not my typical genre but sometimes, you just need an escape... this is one of my favorites! Molly is probably favorite romantic heroines of all time. Honest, cute and sassy!! I've read/listened to several of Phillips books and this was the best of those. The narrator is top notch!
I would not buy another book from this author.
Every part of the book was 5 times too long, too wordy, too repetitive, and too boring.
Maybe. David Pittu was great at different characters I just didn't like him for the main character. Then again... there wasn't anything else to like about the main character either.
When the main character was contemplating suicide... I was rooting for him to do it.
I loved both Power of One and Brother Fish so Jessica was a disappointment. The relationships were underdeveloped, the characters unrealistic, and the story could (should) have been broken up into two books. It is hard to swallow there could be so many evil women out there... in one place... mothers and sisters no less. The only happy moments seemed to pop out of no where and without developing a vested interest in the outcome. Humphrey Bower was, as always, 5 stars! Jessica is 2 stars at best.
I love listening to Gaiman... I wish he could tuck me in and tell me bedtime stories. I enjoyed his performance and the story while not as much as The Graveyard Book which is my favorite of his so far. I couldn't imagine reading his books, however, if they are available on audible with him as the narrator!
What an amazing narrator!!! I can't say enough about how great he is and the unbelievable feat he accomplished by creating so many disparate and believable charactor voices. Bryce Courtenay is also an incredible writer. Interesting and real characters... intriguing storylines... heartwarming relationships... great dialogue (loved his colloquial speech)... BUT, I think this book would be better read vs. listened to. Courtenay has a habit of saying the same thing in many different ways. It gets tedious and repetitive and I found myself daydreaming while I was listening. Much could have been cut out. That is the only reason for the 4 rating. Otherwise, it would be a resounding 5. I'm going to read The Power of One vs. listen to it.
If British Chick Lit is what you are looking for, this is it. Very cute, entertaining, and funny. I really liked the heroine. The narrator was great!! If I were to rate this versus my other favorites like The Help, and Girl with a Dragon Tattoo, I would rate it lower than a 4. BUT, in the world of Chick Lit... this is a 4.
I bought this book because of the "unraveling of the family's secrets and surprising revelations from the past" and the great reviews. The so-called secrets were obvious and too quickly revealed. There was no build up to any of the events that happened. I was very disappointed and often times BORED.
This one was even better than Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. They are both fantastic, however, so get them both... and in order. I can't wait for the 3rd!
One of the best audiobooks I've listened to. Not a big fan of crime fiction but this was smart, interesting, and had flawed but lovable characters. Lots of difficult to remember Swedish names, but stick it out... it's rare I find an audiobook that can capture my attention so much so that I can't wait to get in the car to listen.
Loved it! Pleasantly surprised that a book, solely of letters could be so satisfying. I loved every character, every storyline, and every narrator. One of my favorite audiobooks. I'll be giving this book as X-mas gifts!
