  • Our Endangered Values: America's Moral Crisis

    • UNABRIDGED (4 hrs and 50 mins)
    • By Jimmy Carter
    • Narrated By Jimmy Carter

In Our Endangered Values, Carter offers a personal consideration of "moral values" as they relate to the important issues of the day. He puts forward a passionate defense of separation of church and state, and a strong warning of where the country is heading as the lines between politics and rigid religious fundamentalism are blurred.

    Vicki says: "Very interesting"
    "Very interesting"

I found this book very interesting and with a humanistic viewpoint as you would expect from Jimmy Carter. He is definitely not in favor of current political policy and gives some background why he believes as he does. While it is a biased book, I found it worthwhile as another perspective on our current domestic and international situation. And, President Carter's reading of the book was warm and genuine.

  • The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business Is Selling Less of More

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 1 min)
    • By Chris Anderson
    • Narrated By Christopher Nissley

Our world is being transformed by the Internet and the near limitless choice that it provides to consumers; tomorrow's markets belong to those who can take advantage of this. The Long Tail is really about the economics of abundance, an entirely new model for business that is just starting to show its power as unlimited selection reveals new truths about what consumers want and how they want to get it.

Jim says: "Good Book, Flawed by Repition"
    "Interesting look at niche marketing"

I thought this book has some interesting points about niche marketing that I shared with others along the way as I listened. I got a few points to think about for my own business.

  • The Gettysburg Gospel: The Lincoln Speech that Nobody Knows

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 48 mins)
    • By Gabor Boritt
    • Narrated By Michael Kramer

The literature of the Gettysburg Address tends to fall into one of two extremes. At one end are those books that maintain that Lincoln wrote his speech hastily, even on a scrap of paper on the train en route from Washington to Gettysburg. In this version, Lincoln delivered his remarks to an uncomprehending public, which applauded politely, failing to appreciate his genius. Many of the books that argued this point of view are out of print today, but the myths and legends live on.

    D. Littman says: "add this to your Lincoln bookshelf"
    "Good history listen"

I really liked the first half of the book the best, especially the accounts of the battle of Gettysburg and its aftermath. It was so interesting to think about the personal aspect of what happened to the city. On the whole, I thought this was a worthwhile read, but the last parts dragged on.

  • Fieldwork: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 4 mins)
    • By Mischa Berlinski
    • Narrated By William Dufris
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

When his girlfriend takes a job in Thailand, Mischa Berlinski goes along for the ride, working for one of Thailand's English-language newspapers. One evening a fellow expatriate tips him off to a story. A charismatic American anthropologist has been found dead, a suicide, in the Thai prison where she was serving a 50-year sentence for murder. Motivated first by simple curiosity, then by deeper and more mysterious feelings, Mischa searches relentlessly to discover the details of her crime.

    Lee says: "WOW WOW WOW"
    "Fascinating but wanders"

I thought this book was fascinating in the details and descriptions. You just wanted to hang on their every word. That said, it also felt too long. The story took many diversions and I'm not sure they all added value. By the time the 9+ hours were done I was ready for the conclusion, but it didn't come until the last half hour. This is richly written and wonderful characters. I recommend it.

  • Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West

    • UNABRIDGED (19 hrs and 41 mins)
    • By Gregory Maguire
    • Narrated By John McDonough
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Heralded as an instant classic of fantasy literature, Maguire has written a wonderfully imaginative retelling of The Wizard of Oz told from the Wicked Witch's point of view. More than just a fairy tale for adults, Wicked is a meditation on the nature of good and evil.

Kathleen says: "It's not easy being green"
    "Pretty good read"

I did enjoy the book and found the plot fascinating, although it did seem there was a lot of extra stuff that could have been eliminated. I had a little trouble meshing the Wizard of Oz with the book, but I think that was the point of hearing the other side. I was disappointed at the end because it just stopped. It assumed you knew how it ended because of the movie, but then, maybe the next book picks up from there. I found the characters interesting and very different. It was worth my time.
