In Ava’s dreams, her son, Noah, looks just the way she remembers him: a sweet two-year-old in rolled-up jeans and a red sweatshirt. When Ava wakes, the agonizing truth hits her all over again. Noah went missing two years ago, and his body has never been found. Almost everyone, including Ava’s semi-estranged husband, Wyatt, assumes the boy drowned after falling off the dock near their Church Island home. Ava has spent most of the past two years in and out of Seattle mental institutions, shattered by grief and unable to recall the details of Noah’s disappearance.

"The Narrator Distracts from the Story"

Would you consider the audio edition of You Don't Want to Know to be better than the print version?

No. The narrator was so distracting that there were many occasions that I would imagine how I would have said it had I been reading it out loud.

Has You Don't Want to Know turned you off from other books in this genre?

    No.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

She emphasized words in an awkward manner. She didn't seem to find the right rhythm and cadence. It was so distracting to listen to her. She needs a director.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    No.

The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

Great story with deep, rich characterization. I was sad when it ended. The narrator was excellent and added to the story rather than detract.
