    Story

Bernadette Fox is notorious. To her Microsoft-guru husband, she's a fearlessly opinionated partner; to fellow private-school mothers in Seattle, she's a disgrace; to design mavens, she's a revolutionary architect, and to 15-year-old Bee, she is a best friend and, simply, Mom.

Then Bernadette disappears. It began when Bee aced her report card and claimed her promised reward: a family trip to Antarctica. But Bernadette's intensifying allergy to Seattle - and people in general - has made her so agoraphobic that a virtual assistant in India now runs her most basic errands.

The humor in this book is deadpan. The narrator is as excited and eager as a puppy. It's totally wrong. I haven't laughed once.

Right, why does Danaerys sound like a Dornish lebrechaun? What was Roy thinking? I don't get it. Does anyone ever listen to these while they're being recorded?

Isabel Spellman's life consists of 24-hour surveillance, routine investigations into her acquaintances, and listening devices planted in her deadbolt-locked room. For a 28-year-old in a family composed almost entirely of private investigators or former cops, the tools of the trade turn typical family dysfunction into commonplace espionage.

writing -- really, really hack. a big disappointment because it sounded like an interesting premise.
