Of all of John Irving's books, this is the one that lends itself best to audio. In print, Owen Meany's dialogue is set in capital letters; for this production, Irving himself selected Joe Barrett to deliver Meany's difficult voice as intended. In the summer of 1953, two 11-year-old boys – best friends – are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary and terrifying.

The best book money (or credits) can buy! This is truly the best book I have ever read. My first Irving book and since listening I have bought 4 other books by this author. Some people feel that the voice given to Meany by the narrator is unbearable...but that the whole idea!!!!
Also, just when it feels like the author goes into to much detail about a small fact you come to find out the that what he's going on about iS actually an essential part of the book.
I cried about 5 times throughout this book and highly recommend it. This is the first book I have ever ventured to call a masterpiece!

To five-year-old Jack, Room is the entire world. It is where he was born and grew up; it's where he lives with his Ma. Room is home to Jack, but to Ma, it is the prison where Old Nick has held her captive for seven years. Through determination, ingenuity, and fierce motherly love, Ma has created a life for Jack. But she knows it's not enough...not for her or for him. She devises a bold escape plan, but what she does not realize is just how unprepared she is for the plan to actually work.

I couldn't tell from the sample that all 4 of the listed narrators would have so little to do with the book. The story is told from the perspective of a five year old boy. The boy narrates the entire book, with the exception of the voices of what the adults say to him throughout the story.
I made the mistake of looking at the reviews and assuming Room would be as good as the reviews looked. What a mistake!
It was an extremely interesting premise. I listened and the first 10 minutes were extremely interesting. As well as the last hour of part 1. I couldn't believe that I had to spend 10 hours listening to what sounded like my God son ask questions about the world. I sympathized but couldn't listen. I ended up skipping around most of the book.
    What a waste
