This disorienting and bleakly funny work is about a schizophrenic hero named Horselover Fat, the hidden mysteries of Gnostic Christianity, and reality as revealed through a pink laser. Valis is a theological detective story, in which God is both a missing person and the perpetrator of the ultimate crime.

What did you love best about Valis?

One of Dick's best stories. An truly important book. Tough going, but worth the time for anyone interested in the nature of God.

The setting is the Georgia wilderness, where the state's most remote white-water river awaits. In the thundering froth of that river, in its echoing stone canyons, four men on a canoe trip discover a freedom and exhilaration beyond compare. And then, in a moment of horror, the adventure turns into a struggle for survival as one man becomes a human hunter who is offered his own harrowing deliverance.

Would you listen to Deliverance again? Why?

Will Patton does a great rendition. Captures all the subtlties of that Southern flavour. He does the same for Johnson's Tree of Smoke. Great reader. As good as reading it yourself--better sometimes.
