I like to get an audio book thats long in hours and worth the listen and that's what you'll get with Roses. The narration is soothing, with great southern accents and yet well done character voices. The main characters were very believable and I found myself thinking about them until I could get back to my ipod. Overall a very enthralling historical, family "mystery" romance.
I really enjoyed listening to the author's actual voice in this memoir format. Only she could bring her own experiences, emotions and frustrations to life in the way that was true to her story.
"When a Mother walks away from Societal Expectations"
As a mother of three children, I could truly relate to this memoir. I found it very encouraging and would definitely recommend it to any mom, (stay-at-home or working outside the home) who is trying to do it all. This book just makes a woman realize that so many of us go through the same stressors and struggles, but it takes guts to be genuine about it, like Katrina did in her book.
I would recommend this book to a friend because many of us "try" to eat healthy and organic, but it can seem like a lonely path to travel. Barbara tells about her family's project to "eat local" for one year. Although this is a true story, this book does not sound like a non-fiction book, but an enjoyable story to listen to. It has inspired me rather than overwhelmed me to look at the food I eat and to try to make a few changes in my diet to eat better and feed my family well.
As a farmer's daughter, turned city dweller, I could relate to and laugh about the chapter on harvesting the turkeys and chicken day! Barbara also comes up with delightful twists of wording that just draw the listener in.
The author narrated this book herself along with other family members. I truly enjoyed Barbara's narration and I've listened to hundreds of books! Her voice is soothing which made this a relaxing listen when it could have been sort of overwhelming with advice, tips, and recipes. I really enjoyed hearing her family member's voices as well. It kind of felt like I was sitting in their living room listening to them tell me personally about their experiment to eat locally for one year.
An inspiring yet "do-able" listen for anyone who eats organic, cares about animal rights and the environment. Through her storytelling, Barbara has a way of encouraging small changes to improve our food choice lifestyle. Looks like I'll finally make my way to my local farmer's market!
I would recommend this book to a friend in print form because I think it would be a more enjoyable read than listen.
I found the audio version somewhat confusing because the narrator did not give enough differentiation to each of the different women "character voices." So I often found myself confused about who was speaking in that particular chapter. This is a book that would have been better served with a variety of narrator voices I believe.
I think this would make a very beautiful screen adaptation.
I was a little disappointed in "Love Anthony" as compared to Genova's "Still Alice." I see what she was aiming for, but the plot was just more convoluted. Again, perhaps a different narration style would have helped.
It seems I've been on a dry stretch of trying to find a book that would really capture my interest lately. Moloka'i has it!! I learned a lot, the characters were realistic and memorable and the historical research was remarkably well done and yet easily transposed into a great plot about the history leprosy colony off main land Hawaii.
A narrator who obviously has the knowledge of Hawaii and its language and traditions only adds to the enjoyment of this listen.
At first the mystery in this novel drew my in, but by the end I just wanted to get it over with. The plot line of this mystery went overboard to the point of ridiculous with it's plot twists. By the end the narrator's voice was annoying - or maybe it was just the main character herself.
I've been enjoying many great Laura Lipmann reads, and decided to switch it up. I'm going back to Laura.
This book would probably be better as a shortened, edited movie. It might actually have potential on screen.
I enjoyed this book because I simply could NOT guess the outcome of the story and just had to keep listening to get to the mystery solution!! A great escape read.
Lucky made a great impact upon me personally, encouraging me in what I am going through in my own life, although of a far different nature...Alice's bravery in persuing her assailant and sharing her story has inspired me.
Intriguing, romantic, historical
Dee, the failed actress who missed hollywood fame by a slip of fate and goes on with stoicism
Loved this listen
I really enjoyed the narration of this audible choice, particularly the "Idaohan" accents.
This is definately a novel of characters and relationships...I developed a particular fondess for Cora, the main character, as she evolves through the story.
This is a relaxing listen; the narration is particularly soft and soothing with a very melodic smooth quality...there is something "different" about the sound of this narrator that I found refreshing. I fell into the story line and enjoyed it to the end.
This would be one of the most memorable books I've listened to out of almost 300...because I kept laughing outloud...bursting in to jolts of surprised laughter and looking a little crazy while listening on the bus!!
Sully is a character who just grows on you...it is like a deeper journey with one of the characters from "Grumpy Old Men." This character just continued to surprise me with his reactions and one liners to the very end.
This is definately a "character" novel...not a real plot driven story. Never the less the characterization (and the audio narration in particular) was so well developed with such perfect humour, that my enjoyment and shock at this character's personality just kept growing. Have to say a little disappointed with the end of the story, but still a very entertaining listen!
