Sometimes my mind drifts off when I'm listening to an audiobook and I have to backtrack to hear what I missed. This never happens with the Monster Hunter International series! Lots of fast paced action and unexpected twists keeps my mind fully occupied.
Unlike some fantasy books where the characters are conflicted, Zee is different in that he's very clearly the good guy. Not just THE good guy, but A good guy too - one you'd want to have a beer with.
If you like stories where good kicks evil's butt, this is the series for you!
I stopped reading thrillers for awhile because the plots had become predictable (that's probably MY issue though), and took a break to read some sci-fi. I can't remember what made me download this particular book, but I'm glad I did. The book was full of twists and surprises, none of which I saw coming. None of the characters were particularly likeable, and by the end of the book it felt like I knew them.
Every character has a flaw, and the flaws are so interwoven that I never knew what to expect.
At first I thought the narrator was struggling with some of the dialects, but as I got further into the book it sounded smoother. It was very easy to tell the characters apart.
Fallen isn't an especially long book, but it held my attention and made me listen a little longer than I'd intended to! This would be a great book to accompany a project like sealing the deck or wallpapering.
Wil Wheaton is my new favorite narrator, and I'm definitely going to be downloading more John Scalzi audiobooks. Agent to the Stars is what I consider light reading; pure entertainment. Mr. Wheaton's narration adds color (and texture?) to the story, and the result was 100% fun. This audiobook would be perfect to listen to on a long drive.
Don't know what I was doing back in 1998 that made me miss this Stephen King book, but I'm rather glad to have the chance to listen to it now in 2012. Hearing King read the book was both intimate and chilling. Although the plot is supernatural (which I can't quite believe in), the characters are credible and I thoroughly enjoyed the listen.
After all the hype, I was expecting some unique plot twists. Sadly, this isn't the case. Without the mature content, the plot wouldn't be strong enough to stand on its own. And the mature content ...well, let's just say it's been done better (Anne Rice's Beauty trilogy, anyone?). It does seem to be striking a chord with readers though - it remains one the top downloads, and everyone seems to be talking about it.
Under the Dome was vintage Stephen King. It thrilled me much like The Stand did, way back when. But the difference between then and now is that back then, I read the book and created the character's voices in my head. Today I listen to the voices created by the narrator, and I assume a producer. The new way is easier on my eyes, but nowhere near as enjoyable when the narrator is not able to "read" women characters without making them sound like children. The character of Julia Shumway, for example, is a very strong woman. But vocally, she was portrayed as breathy, high pitched and at times she even had a lisp. It was so distracting that it almost ruined the book for me.
It can't be easy to be a narrator, especially with multiple characters like in this book...but Mr. Esparza's portrayal of women reminded me of the voice a man uses when he's mimicing his wife behind her back. I'm giving the book a 4 because the strong story line managed to outweigh the manner in which women were presented.
In Death Masks, Jim Butcher seems to have hit his stride as an author. After the first two books I wasn't sure, but I'm glad I came back. The Archive and Kincaid were interesting characters that I'd like to see more of in the future.
I rather miss James Marsters' deep manly breaths that were so frequent in the early books, but his narration in this book was top notch, especially his rendition of Father Vincent, the Italian priest. It's a good melding of author and narrator, in my opinion.
I hope book 6 is available soon!
