New York Times best-selling authors Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins have sold more than 60 million copies of their Left Behind series, the fastest-selling adult fiction series of all time. Now these extraordinarily popular writers unveil the hotly anticipated Countdown to Rapture series, the thrilling saga that leads to the events of the Left Behind books.

    Overall

Where the last few books of the original series slipped into a la-la land of forced solutions and spread out plotlines to fit the 12 book target, this book feels free of any "pace quota", and I hate to say it, but it's refreshingly dark. Carpathia & co. seemed like charicatures of evil -- Bond villains -- in the original series. Here it's as if the LB world has been re-imagined and the dark side given some teeth. Great litrature? Nope. A page turner... well a "keep-your-iPod-handy" kind of audiobook? Yep.

    Overall

I've been listening to the unabridged audio version of The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren.

The first little bit it was refreshing because you could sense he had this wonderful idea to write a book about ditching your ambitions, emptying yourself out, finding your true calling and fulfilling it. Then ditching your ambitions to have a great "calling" (like sensing you're "called" to be a missionary to the Bahamas) and realizing with great reluctance and relief that your calling was simple. Obey. Wow.

Then by about, oh, page 3 the whining started. And I mean WHINING. His voice. His intonation. Oh my goodness. He sounds pathetic. Like a nagging dad harping on a teenager who's not even doing anything all that bad.

I have about one more hour in a nine hour program to listen through, and I can't stand it. As a matter of fact I just scanned through the rest quickly and deleted the file. Thankfully I didn't pay full price, I just used up an Audible.com book credit.

The bumper music is a sap-fest. Think 1970's diamond ring commercials or something. I picture soft-focus shots of a gigantic Bible lit by candles on a lace tablecloth.

Anyway, nice idea. Should have been an essay, not a 40-day program with tie-in merchandise.

    "The purpose-driven Church"
    "The purpose-driven Marriage"
    "The purpose-driven Hockey Team"
    "The purpose driven Zucchini Garden"

Anyway, if that was someone's attempt to become the Tony Robbins of christendom, it's off the mark by about 179 degrees.
