Alissa doesn’t believe in magic. Her father’s stories about the Hold, a legendary fortress where human Keepers learn magic from the enigmatic Masters, are just that—stories. But her mother insists Alissa has inherited her father’s magical ability, so she must go to the Hold to be trained. On her way, she crosses paths with Strell, a wandering musician from the plains.

I am a huge fan of the combination of Kim Harrison (Dawn Cook) and narrator
Margureite Gavin! I have read every Rachel Morgan book that's been out and loved them dearly. I ended up listening to this whole book in two days, yep didn't get anything else done and I am downloading the next one.

Based on previous reviews I had purchased this first book thinking I would have to drudge through it to get to the rest of the books with better ratings. I don't know what the others were thinking but I was NEVER bored. What a great set up to the rest of this ongoing story! Anytime one plans to read/listen to a story of this magnitude one has to expect the first couple of books to be mostly background and set up for the rest. I was pleasantly happy with the whole thing and have already downloaded the second book and though the trumpets blowing are a little odd, they aren't near as bad as everyone else made them sound. I love Jim Butcher, I love the Dresden Files, and now I love the Alera Codex too!

His own soul is up for grabs. Dresden must dig deep to discover that at time a willingness to accept a little help from your friends, be they a cub pack of werewolves, old loves in sheep's clothing, or a battalion of pizza loving dewdrop fairies, is a very good thing.

I have to admit that the first book, I debated on whether to go on with the others..I am very glad that I did. The only thing I don't understand is why audible has the first four books and then it skips to 8,9,10.11. What happened to the 3 in the middle? In the first 4 he has a cat...I noticed starting in book 8 he has a dog??? what's up with that? Highly recommend these books no matter what - lot's of fun and very droll.

But their protective shield is not as impenetrable as they think. Somea, angry and outraged by the treatment of her family and friends, throws a stone at the shield, putting all her rage behind it. She is amazed when it sails unrestricted through the barrier and knocks a magician unconscious.

The Story was very good...enough that I bought the second and third books to find out what happened........the narrator grates on the nerves. If you can tolerate the person reading this book it is worth sitting through.

I download these books to kill time in traffic..anything by Christine Feehan is always fun..we are not talking about great literature but engaging never the less. I wasn't too crazy about the narrator; there seemed to be some odd gaps at wierd times when one was waiting for the rest of a sentence but it was a good story..
