The vampires of Asheville, North Carolina, want to establish their own clan, but since they owe loyalty to the Master Vampire of New Orleans, they must work out the terms with him. To come up with an equitable solution, he sends an envoy with the best bodyguard blood money can buy: skinwalker Jane Yellowrock. But when a group of local campers are attacked by something fanged, Jane goes from escort to investigator. Is it a rogue-vampire, shapechanger, or witch? Or something else magical?

  • In One Person: A Novel

A compelling novel of desire, secrecy, and sexual identity, In One Person is a story of unfulfilled love—tormented, funny, and affecting—and an impassioned embrace of our sexual differences. Billy, the bisexual narrator and main character of In One Person, tells the tragicomic story (lasting more than half a century) of his life as a “sexual suspect,” a phrase first used by John Irving in 1978 in his landmark novel of “terminal cases,” The World According to Garp.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I enjoyed listening to book. I think I would have lost interest in the story if I had been reading it.

Would you be willing to try another book from John Irving? Why or why not?

    Sure.

Have you listened to any of John Benjamin Hickey’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is the 1st performance I have listened to by him.

Was In One Person worth the listening time?

Yes, in fact listening was the best way to enjoy this story. It would have been a slow read.

    Any additional comments?

I mainly enjoyed the story but it was long and dry in certain sections.

Anne Rice lures us once again into the seductive world of vampires with her short story, The Master of Rampling Gate. In 1888, siblings Richard and Julie are drawn to the beautiful but foreboding 400-year-old family mansion. What was the "unspeakable horror" their father saw in the luxurious home they are so drawn to? Available in audio exclusively from Audible.

Would you try another book from Anne Rice and/or Gigi Marceau?

I love Anne Rice books. I've read almost all of her works. As a fan, I will continue to read/listen to her newer books.

What could Anne Rice have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I found the characters were lost a bit in the descriptions of the house and locations. I usually love the details of the settings but this book felt uneven.

Have you listened to any of Gigi Marceau’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is the 1st book I've listened to with Gigi performing. I thought she did a fine job.

Do you think The Master of Rampling Gate needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Not really- I did not build a relationship with the characters in the same way I have with Anne Rice's other books.
