This is the type of book that gave me withdrawal symptoms when it was over. I wanted to know more about Justice Sotomayor's life and thoroughly enjoyed Rita Moreno's reading (Justice Sotomayor also reads certain parts of the memoir). I'm now waiting for Part II, which I hope she is forced to write by popular acclaim!
This is a great listen and a great story. It departs from King's usual fare in that there is no supernatural happenings so it's more of a traditional detective story. But King still manages to humanize his "monster" so that the listen is compelling. His heroes are also not the usual King cast, which is a nice departure. Highly recommend!
I had eagerly awaited this third installment in the new series by Macomber but was very disappointed. The characters in this book act like children, including Jo Marie, and the novel doesn't get interesting until the very end. The cliffhanger is enough to make me want to get the next book but the sub-plots in this one are rather disturbing. Hoping that the next installment is better.
If you like detective stories and mysteries, especially those that break the mold, I highly recommend this one. Its protagonist is an African American woman and the mystery to be solved connects the times of slavery in the United States with contemporary issues of undocumented migrants in farms. Very well done and a great performance read. I'm eagerly awaiting the next book by Attica Locke!
I can't believe I wasted hours of my life listening to this book! I kept on listening, hoping that the story would improve, but that didn't happen. While the performance is excellent (the reader does a great job of reading different characters), the story is predictable, melodramatic, sentimental, and the heroine is positively shrewish and annoying. The prose is also filled with groan-inducing cliches. What calamity doesn't befall this woman? It was as if the writer took her cue from soap operas, where the heroine endures unbelievable hardships only to (of course) triumph in the end. The story is also troubling because of the stereotypical representation of the black ("African") characters. I'd expect to find these representations in an 18th-century novel but not in a contemporary one. If you're looking for a smart romantic story with a can-do heroine and thoughtful characterizations, this is not for you.
Despite Hilary Mantel's sometimes obscure writing style, Simon Vance does a fantastic job with this audiobook, bringing the characters and the story to vivid life. I am looking for excuses to take long drives just so I can listen to longer stretches of this audiobook. It is probably the best I've "heard" on Audible. Absolutely superb. It's better than reading the actual book.
Probably not. The story has interesting parts but is tied up too neatly and rather unbelievably at the end.
Jennifer Ikeda's reading of Cornelia is very annoying. If there is "overacting" in reading an audiobook, this is one example of it. I almost couldn't get past the first part. Her performance of the male voices is also quite awful (the girl's father sounds like he's constipated) and it's hard to listen to them. The woman who reads the girl's voice is much better though there is a lot of background noise and, at some points, as other reviewers have said, you can hear people laughing in the background. Very poor production.
I will make sure to read reviews before I buy an audiobook next time.
Unusual love story.
The actual moments before the assassination are really well crafted so that you feel you're there with the characters.
Wasson does a superb job with the voices. You forget that it's one narrator and the emotion and drama are wonderfully conveyed by his reading.
No, I needed a few weeks to listen because some parts were slower than others to get through.
I highly recommend this audiobook. It's a great departure for King, though it explores many of his main themes, and it showcases his maturity as a writer by breaking from many of his patterns.
