I'll admit the narrator is horrible. There I said it.
You can tell this is some of Maberry's early work because I feel he is spending way too much time on character developement and detail he doesn't need to be. Seems to be over doing a few things. However the story is awesome once you get into it. The series flows more like one book kinda like The Stand .. instead of three seperate books. It really starts coming together in the 2nd book. I suggest you stick with it. Im glad I did. No its not Joe Ledger.. or Tom Amora for that matter. Its still really good once you get over the narrator. It really is a great and brilliant story as a hole.
I honestly have no idea what I just listened too. I had to re-listen to sooooo much of this book to figure out what was going on.. The author uses adjectives like every other word. Seemed to have a very hard time getting to the point. Very disappointed with this one. I loved the first book. I feel the author was high as h*ll when he wrote this or has the imagination of a 12 year old. I do not recommend it. Only if you want to see what happens to the main character.. Sadly I will probably still listen to the 3rd book when it comes out. :/
I enjoyed this.. Character and concept are all great. The writing is a bit on the basic side... but the story is good.. I couldn't stop listening. The narrator is a bit tough to get though but the story makes up for it.
Keep in mind its 1981... You can tell that Guillermo del Toro's The Strain and Mayberry's Pine Deep trilogy really pulled a lot from this book... I read it back in the 80's and to this day it's still the best of what it is.. Just straight up good Vampire horror.. I'd love to ask Jonathan Mayberry if he pulled alot of his ideas from McCammon's writtings.
A must read.. if you're looking around going ho hum.. there is nothing on Audible I want to read. Narrators might suck.. stories sound un interesting. No werewolve books or vampire books worth a crap and it seems everything right now is Zombies.. I happened to just say what the heck and purchased this.. I couldnt stop listening to it. Its totally different than the usual Zombie story.. well not really.. but the main character is not what your normal hero. I love the fact the book seems to not have a point.. no love story.. no cookie cutter crap..
By no means is this award winning.. but its the perfect saturday afternoon Zombie flick. I will recommend this to all my Audible friends.
PLEASE bring on a sequel!
Ron Perlman... Vampires.. Great Story... Amazing just Amazing... well that was Book 1 ... one of my favorite Audio Book experiences... This book and this read is how I have turned so many people onto audio books
Book 2... no Ron Perlman..... at least we still have some Nazi Vampires.. So thats a plus...
Book 3... wow.. Instead of saving the series they just totally seemed to rush it and throw it all out the window.. Angels... Wango Tango Foxtrot? It seems they really just mashed a bunch of crap together to get this done and over with. Like a movie that hits production hell and has reshoots.. Its like half way through book 2 they had no idea where they where going and bit off more than they could chew. This book had aspects I did like.. wait .. no .. it didnt. . I was so sadly sadly let down. Its like they took book one and just tossed it in a toilet.
and whats with the long middle fingers and how they function with these? this was incredible frustrating to picture.. as they hold shot guns and swords.
First off wow.. its like finger nails on a black board.. Im doing the best I can to painfully finish this book so I can move onto book 2 before I give a full review of what I think of the Dark Tower series. After all the rave reviews and people telling me how great this series is.. I'm finding this horribly drab.. boring .. confusing... and just dull. It appears that Mr King discovered what adjectives are prior to writing this book and recently purchased a thesaurus. Its hard to follow whats going on .. if not staying awake. The Narrator is not doing a horrible job but he is all wrong for this book.. its hard to tell who is talking and who is who because its the same old man reading.. My mother read this book way back when it was a new release and for years has said how much she hated this book compared to other Stephen King books. I only have 2 hours left to go.. and I'm really hoping to make it to the end.. and I will move on to at least book 2 before I completely give up.. Sadly so far this has been my worst purchase on Audible to date. I do not believe one person that says they enjoy this book..I'm sure they enjoy the series and have forgotten how awful this book was to get through.. I'm suing Stephen King if I crash my car from falling asleep listening to this utterly slow drab.. wet napkin of a book.
