"Editing makes a difference"
I liked the story and the characters but the editing made it hard to fully enjoy. I prefer audiobooks in which the chapters have a long pause at the end, as this book has. But, this was the first book I have ever listened to that made it very clear where the reader stopped for a break or the day and resumed and where re-takes were made and edited in. Both the volume and tone of the reader would change abruptly and annoyingly for either, OFTEN.
"Creepy"
While at the top of many lists this was just a bit too dark and creepy for me. My wife had read the print version book and loved it. If you like psychological twists I suppose this is for you but I didn't make it past about an hour of listening and moved on to Cryptomania which fits my taste much better.
"Hated the plot-line"
While it's not hard to believe that there could be people that actually tried to pull this off, just listening to the first few chapters was such a turn off that I had to stop listening. Nothing made me want to listen for more of the story. I could only think that this was too repugnant and I had many other books in my library that would be a better investment of my time.
"Tough Book to Rate -2* for excessive detail"
98% of the book rates 4.5 stars especially with the great story telling of Scott Brick, however, I frequently found myself fast forwarding or seriously considering turning the book off. The gruesome detail is fine for a text in dermatology or oncology but please - I just don't appreciate a good story ruined by fatuous gory details that add nothing to the plot-line or character development. I’m reminded of why I stopped reading Patricia Cornwell – it may be “real” but I think the writer is too talented to need the yuck-factor.
"Another Stephanie Plum"
Good light-hearted "read" very similar to Janet Evanovich. While the writing didn't make me laugh out loud as does Evanovich it will make me smirk to myself. I have read several of the books by this author and enjoyed all. Plot is not too deep but has enough twists to keep you scratching your head. Super job done by the reader!!!
"Cort Gentry is no Mitch Rapp"
I've "read" several of the Gray Man novels. This one just had too many impossible situations for our protagonist to overcome in too short a time. While there are great action scenes it became too implausible and I gave up about two-thirds of the way through the book.
"Continuing the battle but at home"
Typical Scott Harvath but this time his job is within the US. A good story and excellent job by Armand Schultz. Interesting plot involving current NSA capabilities - with a scary "if you think about it too much" use of available computer technology. Scott makes use of some old allies we haven't heard from in quite a while. The movie title probably would be "Who is Watching the Watchers?"
Readers who like this book would probably enjoy David Suarez's "Daemon" and "Freedom".
"Compelling but TMI"
Excellent story line but also very depressing/disturbing (although probably not as bleak as things really are). The story lines about each child as a seperate voice made them stand-out. but it was just too dark for me. Made me think of several other (very successful) authors whose style is just not for me. Sorry Lisa, I'll have to add you to that list of great writers but writers I will tend to pass on.
"ouch!!!"
Made the mistake of buying this without checking reviews. Most of their previous joint tomes have been excellent; this one got too close to the edge and fell off the cliff. Gave up after about 3 hours of hoping this was really not a zombii story.
Narration was very good but cannot recommend the book
Get TERMINAL FREEZE or DEEP STORM instead *****
"John leaves us hanging"
Initially, I was so excited listening to this book and kept telling my wife how much she would enjoy it. Great plot, interesting characters, good insight into a large law firm. However, it left me hanging at the end -it wasn't finished, the ending left so much unanswered I felt like the author ran into a deadline and gave up writing. Only a few of the minor plot lines were resolved and even if this was deliberate so he has the basis for his next book, "The Partner", I am so upset to have invested 10+ hours of listening for the pathetic ending that I don't think I will buy the next book.
