Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

...couldn't wait to take a walk with the ipod or keep driving to get to hear what happened next... Get ready to take a trip back in time.

I really enjoyed the readers as well. They became the characters for me, both at 20 years old and at 90... or 93.

Around the time Elizabeth Gilbert turned 30, she went through an early-onslaught midlife crisis. She went through a divorce, a crushing depression, another failed love, and the eradication of everything she ever thought she was supposed to be. To recover from all this, Gilbert took a radical step. She got rid of her belongings, quit her job, and undertook a yearlong journey around the world, all alone. This is the absorbing chronicle of that year.

While we all should take time to self-reflect and grow, I found the saga to be much too self-indulgent for my tastes. I appreciated the search and the honesty and was slightly jealous of her "me time." In the end I was simply left with the feeling of over the top selfishness.

Why we think it’s a great listen: How do you one-up a book that’s already a global literary phenomenon? Hire Simon Vance to (flawlessly) interpret the loves, lives, and murders of Sweden’s cold and secret-filled world. A spellbinding amalgam of murder mystery, family saga, love story, and financial intrigue. It's about the disappearance 40 years ago of Harriet Vanger, a young scion of one of the wealthiest families in Sweden.

I'm not really a mystery lover but a few of these characters were terrific and I enjoyed the reader too. When you want to take a walk or drive just to listen to your book, you've got a winner.
