Island of the Blue Dolphins is the remarkable story of a strange and beautiful Indian girl who lives a serene and courageous life as the solitary survivor on an island off the California coast. Left behind when the rest of her tribe fled, she waits, year after year, for a ship to come for her. She fights for her very survival, building a shelter, hunting for food, and making weapons to stave off her enemies, the wild dogs who took her brother.

    Story
What made the experience of listening to Island of the Blue Dolphins the most enjoyable?

I liked the little musical pauses between chapters. Some went a little too long, but it was fine.

What did you like best about this story?

    Karana's courage and self-reliance. Awesome!

What does Tantoo Cardinal bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I liked listening to Tantoo Cardinal's interpretation on how she pronounced the Ghalas-at words. I also found it amusing that she pronounced 'shone' as sounding like 'sh-aw-n' and not 'sh-owe-n'. I think it has something to do with European vs. American language.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Not sure. My 12-yr-old thinks that it should be, "Be cautious when choosing your friends". Of course she wasn't really paying attention fully and would have realized that Chief Chowig told his people NOT to befriend the Aleuts. So my tag line would be, "You should've known better" or something like that.

Sam Gribley is terribly unhappy living in New York City with his family, so he runs away to the Catskill Mountains to live in the woods - all by himself. With only a penknife, a ball of cord, 40 dollars, and some flint and steel, he intends to survive on his own. Sam learns about courage, danger, and independence during his year in the wilderness, a year that changes his life forever.

    Story
Would you listen to My Side of the Mountain again? Why?

Yes, I would listen to this story again as it was easy reading, easy listening. Narrator had a pleasant voice.

What other book might you compare My Side of the Mountain to and why?

Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell. Both stories are about youths who are living on their own away from civilization and need to be self-reliant.

    Which scene was your favorite?

The very end (spoiler alert) when he tells his parents, "you'll spoil everything!"

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I had a few chuckles, but as an adult I have a different view than that of my 12-yr-old. She said that book made her think differently about exploring "wilderness". She's never been hiking and is now thinking about going if the opportunity ever arises.

    Any additional comments?

NOTE to AUDIBLE - the narrator skipped a page! Penguin paperback version skips page 148.
