This is like a modern Dallas soap opera on serious steroids, based in Vegas, packed with F-bombs left and right. Everyone is either one or all: richest in vegas, most gorgeous in hollywood, #1 box office star, most sexy, owns the most successful (hotel, club, investment firm, you name it), takes drugs, is royalty, etc.
This is my first Lucky Santangelo novel and first Jackie Collins as well. I do find it entertaining but also ridiculously over the top. Language doesn't usually throw me but many of the characters use the F-bomb in the same way and so often it seems gratuitous rather than adding to the characters, well character! AND, my biggest gripe of all is that Jackie Collins narrates Lucky, the main character; a sixty+ voice narrating a 40+ leading character who is also supposed to be this most sexy, beautiful successful woman, mother, wife just doesn't fit. I picture Jackie Collins whenever she reads because her voice is so distinctive and does sound much older than the Lucky character. Too bad. All the other narrators are excellent which is why I gave it 3 stars instead of 1 in the performance category. I listen while I commute so sometimes I miss something and since one narrator narrates several characters I don't know which character is talking because the voice isn't changed up enough.
Unfortunately I wish I had used my credit towards a more worthy book...
I watched the first book as a movie (with subtitles) and tried listening to this as an audiobook and could not get into it. Found the narrator voice dry and boring as the main issue and the story and characters bounced around a lot, not enough character building initially so I couldn't keep track of who was who... After I started to get a sense of who was who I felt like I needed to start over again because to get the whole story. Sorry just didn't like, didn't finish listening. Wasted my credit.
