  • Rebecca

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs and 45 mins)
    • By Daphne Du Maurier
    • Narrated By Anna Massey

Daphne du Maurier's young heroine meets the charming Maxim de Winter and despite her youth, they marry and go to Manderley, his home in Cornwall. There, the sinister housekeeper Mrs Danvers and the mystery she keeps alive of his first wife Rebecca - said to have drowned at sea - threatens to overwhelm the marriage.

    Rhonda says: "Riveting"
"Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley..."

To me, "Rebecca" was one of those stories that, "I'd seen the movie" and just wasn't interested in reading the novel. Then, I saw the novel in one of those, "One hundred books that you should read" and that sparked an interest in me. I must say I was blown away not only by Du Maurier's story telling abilities, but also her beautiful writing prose.
The narration by Anna Massey is superb. She makes the story her own. I can't imagine anyone else narrating this novel.

  • My Cousin Rachel

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 55 mins)
    • By Daphne du Maurier
    • Narrated By Jonathan Pryce

Ambrose Ashley, Philip's cousin, guardian, and god, married Rachel in Italy and died there. Jealous of his marriage and grief-stricken by his death, Philip prepares to meet his cousin's widow with hatred in his heart.

Diane says: "The best audio book I ever listened to"
    "A New Favorite"

I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed this audio version of My Cousin Rachel.
Daphne du Maurier is a genius at creating a complex story with a very complex Rachel (whom I do feel sympathy). The author weaves this story so beautifully not only in storytelling, but in the beautiful wording. The ending is perfect!

Jonathan Pryce is superb at narration. Through voice inflection, I think he brings a needed sexuality to Phillip that might not come through reading the book. How he changes character from Phillip to Rachel (really all of the characters) so effortlessly is amazing to me. I will definitely be on the lookout for more of his narration.

  • Garden Spells

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 48 mins)
    • By Sarah Addison Allen
    • Narrated By Susan Ericksen
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

The Waverleys have always been a curious family, endowed with peculiar gifts that make them outsiders even in their hometown of Bascom, North Carolina. Even their garden has a reputation, famous for its feisty apple tree that bears prophetic fruit, and its edible flowers, imbued with special powers.

Generations of Waverleys tended this garden. Their history was in the soil. But so were their futures.

Together again in the house they grew up in, the Waverley sisters realize they must deal with their common legacy - if they are ever to feel at home in Bascom - or with each other.

Joihelene says: "I so want to give it 5 stars...!!!!"
    "What do you like?"

I can compare Garden Spells to an infant, while it was cute and enjoyable, it just didn't have the teeth or communication skills for me to recommend it.
