The narrator greatly detracts from the book. His cadence and rhythm never changes and it is maddening.
As hard as I am trying, I just can't seem to get into this one. I have listened to 2-3 books per month since 2006. Can not put my finger on it, but perhaps it is all of the different narrators, or maybe the characters and plot suffer rather than benefit from the multiple authors. It leaves me feeling annoyed for some reason. Bottom line is that I don't know if I can finish this one. I have taken four days to get through about 4 hours of this book - that,s a really slow pace for me. Doesn't seem to going anywhere too fast, and it is not due to extensive character development.
This book has a WEAK story line! Sure... The set-up has great potential for a really good book, but he never develops a narrative. It is just a bunch of poorly conceived "what if all of the lights went out" scenarios. This is really a bunch of political viewpoints loosely strung together in a shallow plot. And his obvious view of the character of the American people is low. City people are all bad, while town folk are mostly good! When I heard "forward by Newt Gingrich”, I thought... Oh no! What have I purchased - but I gave the author his well deserved chance to entertain me. He failed.
