A champion boat racer, Cameron Quinn traveled the world spending his winnings on champagne and women. But when his dying father calls him home to care for Seth, a troubled young boy not unlike Cameron once was, his life changes overnight.

I love the Quinn brothers and this series and the narrator completely butchered it for me. I'm going to try the 3rd one with Phillip since it's a new narrator and hopefully it won't be too terrible. Phillip sounds like a girl right now....

Seth Hubbard is a wealthy man dying of lung cancer. He trusts no one. Before he hangs himself from a sycamore tree, Hubbard leaves a new, handwritten, will. It is an act that drags his adult children, his black maid, and Jake into a conflict as riveting and dramatic as the murder trial that made Brigance one of Ford County's most notorious citizens, just three years earlier. The second will raises far more questions than it answers. Why would Hubbard leave nearly all of his fortune to his maid? Had chemotherapy and painkillers affected his ability to think clearly?

Would you consider the audio edition of Sycamore Row to be better than the print version?

I would. The story moved too slowly for my liking and it just wasn't comparable to the quick pace and exciting story of A Time to Kill.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

A murder trial and a will contest (no matter how controversial it is) are just two worlds apart.

    Which scene was your favorite?

Lucian added some wit and funny scenes.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No. I just wanted it over and I wasn't even rooting for Lettie.

For Lieutenant Eve Dallas of the NYPSD, the job is a useful reminder of what she has to be grateful for this season. Hosting Roarke's big Irish family for the holiday may be challenging, but it’s a joyful improvement on her own dark childhood. Other couples aren’t as lucky as Eve and Roarke. The Reinholds, for example, are lying on the floor of their Downing Street apartment, stabbed and bludgeoned almost beyond recognition. Those who knew them are stunned - and even more heartbroken by the overwhelming evidence that they were murdered by their own son.

If you could sum up Thankless in Death in three words, what would they be?

    Violent, Frustrating, Poignant

Who was your favorite character and why?

Eve and Roarke. I consider them a unit and their partnership is one of the reasons I love the In Death series in general. A reader can tell that they love and respect each other.

What about Susan Ericksen’s performance did you like?

    Outstanding, like always.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I did. In Death books are very page-turning. You want to find out when and where Eve will catch the killer. This one was different in particular because she knew who the killer was. Similar to Treachery in Death. She knows who the villain is so it was frustrating the he kept alluding her.

A freelance programmer, she works at home designing sophisticated security systems.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes! The book has a fantastic plot with a really great heroine. You just fall in love with her and the way she lives her life. The narrator really embodies her character.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I loved Abigail/Elizabeth. It's been a while since Nora has written a great standalone with a strong yet sensitive heroine. You are continuously rooting for Abigail.

What about Julia Whelan’s performance did you like?

She made her characters come to life with her different accents and inflections. I remember reading the book prior to even listening to it, and while it wasn't how I imagined them to be, especially Brooks, Julia was able to own the strong personalities and make Brooks' and Abigail's chemistry come to life.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Of course. This is by far one of my favorites, if not my favorite standalone of Nora's. Her trilogies have taken a turn for the worse, and her standalones can be filled with too much information, so this was such a nice refresh and balance. The Witness is definitely high on the list with her In Death series.

It was one of Eve Dallas’s earliest takedowns, back in her uniform days. A monster named Isaac McQueen had been abducting young victims and leaving them scarred in both mind and body. Thanks to Eve, he wound up where he belonged, removed from civilized society in Rikers. But he’s not behind bars anymore. After his escape, McQueen has two things in mind. One is to take up where he left off, preying on the young and innocent - when necessary, with the help of a female partner all too willing to be manipulated and to aid and abet his crimes.

Susan Ericksen really embraces the In Death world with her narration. It's exciting and leaves readers feeling emotional: happy, sad, empathetic, etc. Nora Roberts does it again with New York to Dallas. It's the most emotionally driven one and it about broke my heart a few times to hear what Eve and Roarke were going through.

In a New York City fifty years in the future, Detective Eve Dallas tracks down those who break the law - including the ones sworn to uphold it. Eve Dallas and her partner, Peabody, are following up on a brutal, senseless crime - an elderly grocery owner killed by three stoned punks for nothing more than kicks and snacks. And for the first time, Peabody is primary detective on the case, which means she has to get used to a new level of authority and responsibility. Good thing she learned the ropes from a master like Eve. But after rounding up the perps, Peabody stumbles upon a much trickier situation.

I've read all of the In Death books and Treachery is still my favorite! Eve and her team have taken a different approach rather than uncovering death. They are about to take down a house of dirty cops. Her enemy is the complete opposite of Eve and it's so nice to see Eve at her finest. She is tough and compassionate, and her goal for justice is really seen in this book. GO EVE!

What would have made How to Marry a Duke better?

    Better characters and their development

Would you ever listen to anything by Vicky Dreiling again?

Absolutely not. I found this to be dragging. The characters were awful, the chemistry wasn't there. And the writing was terrible.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Elizabeth Jasicki?

    Maybe

What character would you cut from How to Marry a Duke?

    Both protagonists.

    Any additional comments?

The book got to the point where I can to make the audio go by 2x speed because I wanted it to end. The characters lacked the chemistry that similar authors write about. There really wasn't any development of the plot and it just dragged.
