to the main character AND the narrator. I never really fully accepted the narrator, especially her characterization of the main character..shrill and grating. I didn't like the main character at all most of the time...not that that's a fatal flaw, I'm not sure she's meant to be very likable. What I really liked about this book was the 'slice of Indian life' aspect. I found the interactions between young Indians and upwardly mobile, downwardly mobile, poor, affluent and desperate Indians enlightening and fascinating.
Or Harry Potter. Or any other of several gazillion YA series...but the point is, this is some good fun. Do it. You won't be sorry.
Why do I keep telling myself that I can recreate the Stephen King experience I had when I was 19? There's a reason why we describe ourselves as young and stupid.
I first read this book years ago. This story is creepy, fascinating, amazing, horrifying and TRUE!! Highly recommend.
I love this book and always have. This is a lovely rendering of it. If you are new to Gaskell, please don't hesitate.
I love this story, love the characters, highly, highly recommend. Not a huge fan of the narrator, but she's ok. I only wish it was a 6 book series..I would buy them all.
This is a great story with great characters. It misses the overall 'great' mark by relying on too many literay cliches and coincidences. Overall, I really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend it. I have always been intrigued by this part of the world (Nova Scotia) and really wish the author had spent more time on the setting.
I wanted to re-read this because I read it years ago and couldn't really remember any details. It's sort of intriguing, but OY, VEY!!! All the narrative tension could have been released by some plain old communication. When you spend 3/4 of the book wanting to smack the characters so they snap out of their idiocy...It's an ok book with an ok story but I would recommend checking it out of the library for free. Don't pay for it.
I read Little Women about 500 times in my childhood/adolescence. It was my 'go to' alternate universe to escape from the world I actually lived in. This book fleshes out that alternate universe in such a rich, sophisticated way. Highly recommend. ps...I really hate this format for reviews. I don't need your help deciding what to say, k? thanks.
a book to me. And a good book, too. Colin Firth + good book = Cannot. Go. Wrong.
I loved this book. It's beautifully written and completely immerses the reader into its world. I didn't want it to end. Highly recommend!
