As I read this book, things kept sounding more and more familiar. I went to the author's website and it turns out I was correct; this book was loosely based in the town of Boonsboro, Maryland. The storyline was gripping and it was difficult to stop listening! There were new 'surprises' throughout the book, so it wasn't totally predictable. I enjoy the Nora Roberts as well as J.D. Robb (her pseudonym) and wish Audible would get more of the Roberts and all of the Robb books (there currently aren't ANY and I've sent in several requests). I am just glad that they had this one...I loved it!
I read this author's last book, Paranormalcy, and thought it was an amazing book (I still do!)
This book started out as though it was a chapter continuing from the last book. It's been awhile since I've read Paranormalcy and I don't remember all of the players, etc. so having the author just continue the last book so abruptly left me lost. I am rating the story with three stars because of this.
The reader is good, not great. I wish that someone who was savvy enough to catch mispronunciations would listen to some of these "teen" books prior to release (an edit to correct for grammar and proper word usage would be good, too- general annoyance, not just this book!)
Bottom Line: Probably a GREAT book if Paranormalcy was any indicator but I'm going to have to re-read that one and immediately go into this one so I have the continuity not given to the reader by the author.
I was torn because of the reviews but am very glad I got this book. I am 1/2 way through it and am enjoying it greatly. It has a lot of different facets to it and I'm enjoying the different story lines. I love historical fiction and really like the paranormal twist. This isn't "another vampire book." I find those knock-off vampire books annoying... This has depth and you should garner some new knowledge about many different things. The only thing I'd like to have seen is more detail in explaining things such as the house system at Oxford, etc. I get the main idea but don't know how the whole thing works and would have found that interesting. That said, if you like historical fiction mixed with the paranormal, try this one...you'll like it! :)
I love all types of books but just couldn't get into this one. The author couldn't decide if he wanted to write a good story or deliver a really boring lecture at a conference. I really wanted to like this because the topic is interesting but the delivery was disjointed and I found myself tuning out the book and thinking about other things. Don't spend your money; if you're curious, get it from the public library, rip it and be disappointed for free.
GREAT book! Somewhat repetitive in places but that is his style to summarize things in the investigations Lincoln Rhyme does. EVERYONE should read this book as the topic is fascinating, well written, well read, and should scare the hell out of you. The implications of the technology discussed are real and scary. The storyline may be fiction but everything else (scarily enough) is real-life governmental terrorism.
This audio book is a "full cast" audio book that is pretty well done. Sometimes, the voice of the Princess seemed a bit overdone but it was good overall. I loved the story line but was frustrated by a few things during the reading. Actions of the characters were sometimes implausible and unnatural reactions/actions of a person. Then again, this is a fairy tale so the actions of people are not normal human actions and reactions. A few of the characters were pretty flat but since they were minor characters, it didn't matter a whole lot. Overall, I would download it again knowing what I know and would still enjoy it. :)
This whole thing was too possible and too disturbing for me. It was not a good follow-up to "Me & Emma." After reading the first half, I was getting in such a bad mood that I finally skipped to the end. I guess that the fact that it disturbed me so much means that it was well done. BTW, this should be classified as "horror" and not as "psych suspense."
I got so attached to the characters. I just finished the book and never expected the ending; I was sure that the "right thing" would happen. It is too real and touches too deeply. Then again, I guess that is the sign of an amazing writer.
As the book opened, the name of the publisher, "Harlequin" made me inwardly groan and think I'd wasted a book selection. Fortunately, I tried to keep a somewhat open mind and kept listening; lucky me!
What an AMAZING book! I couldn't stop listening to it. I am so very involved with the characters and the story line. I thought I knew what was going to happen each time but (at best) was only half right. I could not figure out the 'world' in which the story was set because she kept throwing me off each time I'd make try to put it in a "box".
I do not particularly like fantasy books and will usually stop reading the description when I see this word. This book's summary and reviews intrigued me enough to get it and I'm glad I didn't let my typical biases stop me from trying it. I already have "Magic Study" and am going to listen to that starting today. I want to find out what happens!
If this book doesn't sound like it's really your type of selection, give it a try anyway. I have a feeling that you'll become hooked like the rest of us seem to be.
Do you know how and why the Ferris Wheel was made? That is just one of the interesting questions this book will answer for you. The book almost sounded like a work of fiction. The author was quite adept with the story by keeping multiple plots in the air while having them all make sense and keeping congruity intact. Great book if you want to learn a lot and have a few good plots included!
I am sure now; I didn't like it. I did listen to it in total, but didn't really enjoy it. The time shifts were irritating and I didn't feel that I got to know the characters well enough. I waffled on getting this book because so very many people have given it high regards. I'm solidly in the 'no' camp after reading it. Well, at least I know that I won't get the other book I've been on the edge about, "The Life of Pi."
