  • So Good They Can't Ignore You: Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for Work You Love

In this eye-opening account, Cal Newport debunks the long-held belief that "follow your passion" is good advice. Not only is the cliché flawed - preexisting passions are rare and have little to do with how most people end up loving their work - but it can also be dangerous, leading to anxiety and chronic job hopping. After making his case against passion, Newport sets out on a quest to discover the reality of how people end up loving what they do.

Interesting take on the "craftsman mindset" versus the flawed "passion mindset," an idea supported by work from Daniel Pink, Malcolm Gladwell, and many others. It is absolutely true that business (and some consultants) often go in the exact-opposite direction shown by decades of strong research.

I recommend this book for entrepreneurs and lifestyle designers.

To the Kleese, the Earth is nothing more than a planet full of conscripts to fight in their numerous wars of aggression. The Kleese are one of three large Galactic Empires that control the majority of the galaxy. To them, Earth is an extremely dangerous planet due to the aggressiveness of the humanoid species that inhabits it. The humans that inhabit Earth will make excellent conscripts, but something must be done to prevent them from expanding out into the galaxy.

The two books in this series are written well, and the narrator does a great job individualizing how each character appears in tone and accent. However, the pace of reading is too quick and can be distracting. To be honest, if the vocal characterization wasn't so good, I would have given the performance just two stars and docked the overall score as well.

I recommend listeners grab the sample before purchasing. If you can overcome the pace of the reading, this is a pretty good book.

What do you get when the path of a girl running-away from a barbaric fundamentalist planet collides with space gypsies? This book. Right here.

The Empire's Corps series continues to delight with a story that takes place in a sector of space a small distance from Avalon and the characters we are already familiar with. The characters are rich, with believable happenings in the grander setting of the collapse of the empire, but prior knowledge of the series is not required -- this book stands completely on its own (until the epilogue, which only connects it to the rest of the series in a brief exchange, so no worries if you haven't listened to them).

I recommend this book to everyone (less those who can't stand solid writing and an equally solid performance). I've listened to everything in this series so far, and have all of the planned volumes pre-ordered at least two titles ahead. The Empire's Corps is simply outstanding!

Overall, this is a great continuation of Nuttall's series, but I did have to dock the story (not the overall score) by a star because I felt some parts of it could have developed a bit more. There is, however, a bit of solid character development for a couple of the continuing characters, and that fact makes me very glad that there are more books in this series on the horizon. If you are already familiar with the series, I recommend this book. If you are new to the series, start at the beginning.

The people of Earth now know that the human Colonial Union has kept them ignorant of the dangerous universe around them. For generations the CU had defended humanity against hostile aliens, deliberately keeping Earth an ignorant backwater and a source of military recruits. Now the CU’s secrets are known to all. Other alien races have come on the scene and formed a new alliance - an alliance against the Colonial Union. And they’ve invited the people of Earth to join them. For a shaken and betrayed Earth, the choice isn't obvious or easy.

Jane Sagan: Soldier. Killer. Lover. Dreamer. In John Scalzi's best-selling Old Man's War series of science-fiction novels, we see this warrior woman as the other characters see her - silent and strong, from the outside. But now The Sagan Diary shows us Sagan from another point of view: her own, as she prepares to leave military life and join her new husband and adopted daughter on a colony world.

This short book gives great insights into the inner workings of the mind of one of the major characters in the Old Man's War universe. The writing, narration, and themes are absolutely great, especially -- maybe only -- when considered in the context of the previous two books, "Old Man's War" and "The Ghost Brigades". I highly recommend "The Sagan Diary" only after the previous two because they the context of many of the memories in this book rely on the larger context of those novels.

    Outstanding book!

John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First, he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce - and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So, we fight, to defend Earth and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding.

Wow! This is a war novel, so it is not peaceful and cheery, but the themes and characters are so well-developed that it smacks of Heinlein with a bit more modern language. Although set in the distant future, all of the technology and characters are highly believable, which allows the listener to become part of the story as a spectator and witness to the events. I recommend this book to every sci-fi fan!
