These selections from the many writings of Thomas Sowell over a period of half a century cover social, economic, cultural, legal, educational, and political issues. The sources range from Dr. Sowell’s letters, books, newspaper columns, and articles in both scholarly journals and popular magazines. The topics range from latetalking children to tax cuts for the rich, baseball, race, war, the role of judges, medical care, and the rhetoric of politicians.

If you could sum up The Thomas Sowell Reader in three words, what would they be?

    deep simple true

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Thomas Sowell

His brief autobiography was like the rest of his writing. Concise, interesting, full of deeper insights.

What’s the most interesting tidbit you’ve picked up from this book?

The book has something like a hundred one-line quotables. I've probably use four already in discussions on facebook.

Too many to mention. The entire "random thoughts" chapter was pure gold.

    Any additional comments?

I'm looking forward to my next Sowell purchase.

His unique life has led to a unique wisdom, and fortunately he's got both the talent and inclination to share.

A masterpiece of satire, this classic has entertained and enlightened readers the world over with its sly and ironic portrayal of human life from the vantage point of Screwtape, a highly placed assistant to "Our Father Below". At once wildly comic, deadly serious, and strikingly original, C. S. Lewis gives us the correspondence of the worldly-wise old devil to his nephew Wormwood, a novice demon in charge of securing the damnation of an ordinary young man. The Screwtape Letters is the most engaging and humorous account of temptation - and triumph over it - ever written.

    Story
Where does The Screwtape Letters rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

The best book I've read... ever. I've listened to it twice in the last four days.

What did you like best about this story?

Clever, insightful, funny... relevant today to an extent I wouldn't have thought possible for a book of this age.

What about Joss Ackland’s performance did you like?

His reading is flawless... he was screwtape. Again... never heard a better match of narration talent to a perfect role.

He breathes the appropriate loathsome humor into the performance. There were a few times where he laughed or chortled at exactly the right time in exactly the right way and I laughed out loud.

    Perfect!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Half a century ago, through some unspecified espionage, C.S. Lewis discovered and published the playbook of the Devil. You will be amazed how much of this playbook is still in effect, and how successful it has been.

You are warned... you are doomed.

This is a study of how intellectuals as a class affect modern societies by shaping the climate of opinion in which official policies develop, on issues ranging from economics to law to war and peace. You will hear a withering and clear-eyed critique about (but not for) intellectuals that explores their impact on public opinion, policy, and society at large.

    Story
Would you consider the audio edition of Intellectuals and Society to be better than the print version?

yes, easier to digest while doing other things. (drive, yardwork, etc.)

What did you like best about this story?

Sowell's plain, focused wisdom. His ability to communicate fairly complex ideas without the need to clutter the experience with jargon. His ability to distill simple truths from storms of confusion and irrelevancy, then write only those distilled truths.

What’s the most interesting tidbit you’ve picked up from this book?

Too many to list. Best summary of the important issues relating to WWII I've ever read. Best dissection of the forces/incentives that drive public intellectuals.

    Any additional comments?

No leftist intellectual's belief system will survive an honest, curious reading of this book.
