Well, it worked for Patterson, what with Maximum Ride and all.... And, thank goodness, it worked for Coben, as well! Mickey is Myron's nephew, his Dad dead, and his Mom in rehab. He's the New Kid in School, gets crosswise with the jocks, starts hanging with a Goth girl and a nerdy guy....But then the Big Mystery comes along. Mickey and his friends solve it, save the girl, and share the exciting romp with us. This is a typically gripping Coben yarn interpreted by Nick Podehl, who does a very good job. Mickey's well worth following!
For those of us who buy books simply because they're by Douglas Preston, this is gratifying reenforcement. It's got the disparate characters, independent of one another long enough to turn into our friends, and then joining up to weave all the threads into a web to capture the story and bring it to a crash-bang ending in just the nick of time. In Impact, a couple of young Black northeasterner girls who, together, count among their skills piloting a lobster boat and being a brilliant astronomer/mathematician, link up in various combinations with a maverick federal agent to solve a world-threatening dilemma posed by myopic politicians, aliens, evil scientists, and hitmen. What more could you want?
