This is a well-written, suspenseful mystery read by a brilliant actor. The voices of the characters are delivered with distinct and appropriate intonations.

Research scientist Dr. Marina Singh is sent to Brazil to track down her former mentor, Dr. Annick Swenson, who seems to have disappeared in the Amazon while working on an extremely valuable new drug. The last person who was sent to find her died before he could complete his mission. I've enjoyed several of Ann Patchett's novels (Bel Canto, Patron Saint of Liars), but this book is by far her most ambitious and most intriguing. Patchett presents a fascinating and intelligent protagonist engaged in a meaningful quest in the Brazilian rain forest. This is Heart of Darkness for the 21st century, a Heart of Light, or Heart Aglow. Hope Davis reads with grace and pathos.
