Yes. I would recommend Far From the Tree to people who are not my friends because everyone should read Andrew Solomon's great and important work. His treatment is a gift, and offers an important opportunity to learn.
Ishiguro masterfully constructs a tense emotional core centered on Axl and Beatrice that builds in complexity and depth until the very end. Engaging narration, and solid production quality. I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoyed the Arthurian flavored teen fantasy fiction, but as an adult yearns for something more.
Salman Rushie is an extremely creative writer. His output is staggering and sprawling. It is not whether Satanic Verses was or wasn't worth the the time to read, but whether Rushie is a prisoner of the same cage of sexism he purportedly seeks to escape.
I suppose I will have to give all his books a chance some day, because of the time and attention he has given to reading over the years.
George Sand called Flaubert a "Martyr to Style". This seems accurate, his prose ache with profound meaning.
If Whispersync was available I would be so excited to re-read and add notes! Too many layers for one reading.
