Story is great of course but the lousy narrator almost ruins it. SO disappointed when I saw that woman was doing the voice. ALICE HAS A VOICE and its the one Christopher Evan Welch does.
Alice really shines in this story.
NO BECAUSE GOETHAL ALMOST RUINED THIS BOOK! I'm really irritated about this (can you tell?)
I HATE IT when they change narrators, please authors NEVER EVER do that unless there just isn't a way to keep the original person.
This is another great book by Barker as the follow up to the Abarat. Just note that this audio book seems to have a short part (or two) out of order! makes for disjoint listening. Lucky for me I have a hard copy of the book and was able to get the story straight. Maybe this can get fixed.
The narrator does a good job.
Left me DEPRESSED.
If you love the Wizard of Oz I would caution you against reading this book. While the premise is actually very "clever" and the book well thought out, reading it left me rather depressed. I almost didn't make it through. My mom reading us the Oz stories from her own ancient copies of the book is a very happy childhood memory. For me the land of Oz should remain a pure and wonderful place that is not sullied by real world depravity, callousness, filth, bigotry, cruelty, and abject suffering. I am an adult and I do like adult themed books, but if you have any love of the pureness and innocence of the original OZ books, please think twice about reading WICKED. I wish I hadn't.
I imagine the stage show version is a bit more cleaned up and possibly more palatable.
This series is not as good as the best ones, such as Harry Potter, but it is very enjoyable. And the narrator is excellent.
The series is funny, I usually laugh.
Gaiman stories read by Gaiman should not be missed. I often choose audio books by the ability of the narrator and Gaiman is unparalleled in his ability to bring to life his type of story through the spoken word. His other books such as the Graveyard book, Coraline and Neverwhere are works that I have listened to over and over again.
And as for quality of the story of Stardust itself, while I put those other Gaiman books above Stardust, I was still quite delighted by this tale of the Faerie realm. No fan of Gaiman should pass this story by!
Also at the end there is a wonderful interview with Gaiman about his inspiration for this book, his other works and about how he learned he had an affinity and a love for doing narration.
I loved the description of the Faerie market.
As said, Neil Gaiman is an EXCELLENCE narrator. His voice rich and melodious. He knows his work and he knows exactly where to put the slight pauses to emphasize his unique wry humor and where to speed up to add excitement and heighten drama. He does voices that fit the characters that make each distinctive and convey their personality.
As other people said this book has a brief encounter of really "adult" content that should be kept in mind when young children read it.
