"Thoroughly enjoyable"
Very interesting and educational book - I knew little about the civil war and nothing about this part of it. The book had humor and intrigue even though you know from early on how it ends. I would highly recommend this "listen".
"Skip it"
I'm surprised this is getting such good reviews. I thought two other similar books ("American Sniper" and "Lone Survivor") were significantly better. The stories about Non-Osama missions just ramble on.
I rated down the performance - but it wasn't the performance specifically that I wanted to rate. The editing was ATROCIOUS. There were numerous times where the reading volume, tone, pitch etc. changed in the middle of sentences, stories, etc. It is clear that they had to go back and redo parts - it became very distracting.
"Expected to enjoy it, ended up loving it"
Great book. I thoroughly enjoyed this, including Bill O'Reilly's narration. Lots of interesting things that I didn't know about the assassination. I'm neutral on Bill O'Reilly, if that's possible, and there was absolutely no political rhetoric in this book. I'd also heard about some of the facts being wrong, but after listening to the story and then reading about the inaccuracies it seemed to me people were people very nit-picky. Nothing that has been identified as wrong had any barring on the story. I was hesitant to get it, but kept hearing great things.
One of my favorite Audibles to date.
"Great Story but the narration is corny and painful"
I will NEVER buy another audible book narrated by Paul Michael. I'm not sure how many elementary children Michael believes he is performing for, but as an adult, the corny accents and changes in voice for characters only distract from the story. The story is interesting, and could be engrossing if not for the fingernail on a chalkboard voices Michael comes up with. I wanted to skip by any section with Alexander G. Bell. The absolute worst was the ridiculous voice used for Bell's wife.
Recently I have thoroughly enjoyed books narrated by their authors, and after this disgrace and even more confident that is the way to go.
Too bad - the story could have been fascinating.
