"Why didn't someone tell me about this book before?"
I loved this book. Laugh out loud characters, plot, and great, funny lines. This is one to listen to again in a year or so, I'm sure it will make me laugh each time.
"Fascinating."
I remember when it was reported that some Americans got out of Iraq but I had no idea the intrigue involved. It was interesting which countries would not help the Americans. The Canadians were true heroes. Great read.
"Could not stop listening."
Well written thriller. You start to question everything and everyone. Keeps you guessing until the end. The author did a great job jumping from past to present. Could have been confusing but was not. High hopes for more from this author.
"Good read"
The narrator hammed it up a bit too much for me. Good story, keep me interested all along. More of a thriller than a mystery. You can see how it can happen.
"Who knew?"
The facts rang a faint bell, the president who was only in office a short time before he was assassinated etc. but I had no idea what a fascinating tale this could be. Interesting personal history, interesting election, great medical story with Alexander Bell thrown in for good measure. Couldn't put it down.
"Good mystery"
Well paced, good plot. Spoiler alert! Would have given 5 stars but I'm conflicted by the ending. I guess it was the only way it could end, and I was hanging on until the last few minutes to see what would happen. Clever, but somewhat unsatisfying. That being said, read it. Great fun. Well crafted.
"One of the best books I've read in years."
Original plot, great writing, pitch perfect characters. I hated for this book to end and savored every minute. More from this author please!
"The worst."
People who hate gays, women.
The story wasn't so bad, and since this was written in 1974 it is possible the author is not a complete jerk, but when he starts in on lesbians and the snide comments he makes about minorities and women I started screaming. The love interest was completely unbelievable. I didn't buy it at all. The plot starts off with him being judgmental about sex (a guy? really? about a threesome?) then he hops in bed with . . . (won't spoil the plot if you can't help yourself) and tells us how great older women are. Completely unconvincing. Is he a prude or does he just hate women? All the hype over the release of these books on audio was a huge disappointment.
How would I know, I was screaming over the author referring to professional women as girls. (It did no distract.)
Start over, really.
Disappointing. Thought I had a bunch of new mysteries to read. Maybe I shouldn't have started with this one. Are the others better?
"Why exploration captures us."
Sympathy for devil. The hunt for the source of the Amazon was so difficult you wonder why anyone was willing to risk it. Without that insatiable curiosity, we wouldn't have the glimpse of a continent during a vastly different time. Why was it so dangerous? Why did so many view them as savages? The natives killed outsiders because often those outsiders were slavers. The interplay between the slave trade and the explorers was fascinating.
"One of the absolute best books I've listened to."
I saw the recent movie and liked it more than I thought I would. A friend recommended the book so I bought it not sure I'd like it having just seen the movie. It was spell binding. The reader is perfect for this book. I can't believe this book was "lost" and out of print for so long. Thank John Wayne I suppose for ruining such a great read. One to treasure over and over again.
"Another great listen from Robotham"
Great plot, wonderful mystery, pitch perfect characters. Loved every minute of this great read. Reader is excellent.
