Now I have loved Elephants since I was a wee lassie, so with a title like this one I would certainly gravitate toward it. There were so many things that went on in the years that this book covers you never knew what the next curve of the ride was going to be.
It did not pull any punches there were sad things and wonderful things and some things that you did not know what was going to happen for sure until the very end. But mostly I was entranced to hear this man's account of these wonderful creatures. Even with his attempt to keep them sort of wild, but the Matriarch trusting him, the sensitivity and intelligence of these giants was evident and what I would have guessed about them.
Now I know that not everyone will rush to read this book, but speaking from my heart where the 5 year old still resides that wanted to keep a big elephant in the living room because it ws the biggest room in the house. Try it and see if you do not smile in your heart.
Do you know of personalized story books that you can get for children? You give names of friends and pets and such and a story book is printed making all these names the stars? That is what this book was like to me, just new names inserted into a story and it follows along the lines just like many thousands of others. Do not bother wasting a credit on this book it is not even good background chatter. The reader has a pleasant voice and does the different characters well, but she cannot make a bad story good.
This book was so fascinating that I did not want to stop listening to it. I went to great lengths to make sure my IPOD did not run low on the battery.
The above is all I can say about this book. Every night when my husband came home I mentioned to him I was listening to this story and how much I enjoyed what I had heard that day. This is my first Stephen King book, and I must say it was the time travel in the synopsis that attracted me to purchase this book. I would certainly recommend it.
While this is not the longest book I have listened too, it is certainly the longest I have listened to without ever reading the book. I did find I had to go back a few times because with all the names and aliases, and unusual people popping up that you were not sure where they fit in the story. In fact I even asked my husband if he read the book and if he had to give me a quick synopsis. His was the same as mine before I purchased the audible book. So after I stopped thinking I had purchased the wrong book and just went back to re-listen a couple of times, and then when it still did not fit in I just had faith and plunged forward. It really does all come together. But what a story and so much detail & planning. So I would certainly recommend this audio book, but do not be to distracted while listening to it so you do not have to go back.
I first stumbled upon this book at a yard sale 6 years ago. Books for a quarter and I had a long trip coming up so I picked up a whole bag ful so I would have plenty to read. Little did I know this story would become one of my favorite. I have read it once a year, oddly around spring, but this time I had the audio version and I must say that adding the suspense of the performance was a big plus to the experience.
The long drawn out child hood and insecurities were forever to slog through. And then the final idea that she really did not want to marry the Duke, and consequently there is this big scandal. I have no clue what the real story really was but this seems far fetched.
I purchased this one by accident, and I love the Amelia Peabody series however the abridged left me wondering who actually was the enemy and to many holes on the plot
I do love Barbara Rosenblat's performances. I look forward to finding the unabridged version of this read by her.
For some abridged is perfect, I admit that the series is sometimes longwinded. But that is what I love about it. The little jokes, the bantering the descriptions. So if you like the same reading I do then skip this one. If you would rather the less wordy then this is perfect for you.
If I had held out for the unabridged
I like the Genre just not an abridged version that jumps around so much I could not follow the story. I listened to it twice and a few chapters 4 times and still felt like I was not getting the details of the story that I relish.
Sethos introducing himself to the family.
What has happened to Celia, the egyptian orphan that was fathered by Percy but cared for by Ramses?
When will you have unabridged version?
This is the abridged version, I purchased it and the next two in the series not paying enough attention. However Audible does not carry the Unabridged version currently. So if you are not a fan of very detailed information in the Amelia Peabody series this book is for you. I personally like that much detail, but not everyone is like me, and that is ok.
What was disappointing is that it was chopped up in this version. I felt there were clear places where things continued on as though parts were not missing. However I think once I can locate and listen to the full unabridged version I am going to love it as much as all the others I have listened to and have really enjoyed.
I Adore her Amelia! Her other voices are wonderful too, and her other characters are so good that to me the male voices are believable in the book listening context.
I enjoy Amelia's bravery and the tongue in cheek humor I find in this series. I bought the first of the series just by accident the story sounded interesting & it was on sale. Some months later I found the second on and then figured out it was a series so I started listening to them all, and really enjoyed each one until this one. I am in the middle of the next abridged version I purchased (Guardian of the Horizon) and I am not happy with it.
When do you think you will get these three in the unabridged version?
