  • Four Fish: The Future of the Last Wild Food

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 49 mins)
    • By Paul Greenberg
    • Narrated By Christopher Lane
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Our relationship with the ocean is undergoing a profound transformation. Just three decades ago nearly everything we ate from the sea was wild. Today rampant overfishing and an unprecedented biotech revolution have brought us to a point where wild and farmed fish occupy equal parts of a complex and confusing marketplace.

    Dan says: "Great listen"
    "Great listen"

If you fish, like to eat fish, and/or care about our environment, you will enjoy this book. From the personal story at its beginning to the common sense epilogue, this book is extremely well done (and well narrated), weaving in first-hand research along with entertaining stories. This is the kind of book you will want to listen to for hours and will be disappointed when it concludes.

  • Trust Agents: Using the Web to Build Influence, Improve Reputation, and Earn Trust

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 59 mins)
    • By Chris Brogan, Julien Smith
    • Narrated By Chris Brogan, Julien Smith

How to tap the power of social software and networks to build your business. There's no question that the Internet has changed the way we do business - especially when it comes to marketing. Consumer environments are short on trust and populated by consumers who are cynical, savvy, and informed.

Cheril says: "This book is the one to read"
    "Buy the print edition"

There is a ton of useful information in this book, but the narration is horrible (perhaps the worst I've ever listened to) -- barely audible at times. Buy the print edition, skip this version.

  • FDR's Folly: How Roosevelt and His New Deal Prolonged the Great Depression

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 26 mins)
    • By Jim Powell
    • Narrated By William Hughes
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

In the minds of historians and the American public alike, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was one of our greatest presidents, not least because he supposedly saved America from the Great Depression. But as historian Jim Powell reveals in this groundbreaking book, Roosevelt's New Deal policies actually prolonged and exacerbated the economic disaster.

    A User says: "Very Important"
    "Way too long"

The concept of this book is great -- the research is quite in-depth. But there is way too much detail which takes us away from the main thrust of the book -- that FDR's policies likely contributed to a lengthening of the Great Depression. Too often we have to listen to microscopic details about quite minor figures in the book. Take a pass on this one.

  • The Secrets of Success: Eight Self-Help Classics That Have Changed The Lives of Millions

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 19 mins)
    • By James Allen, Wallace D. Wattles, Russell H. Conwell, and others
    • Narrated By various

Life-changing wisdom never goes out of style! These eight classic works have truly stood the test of time, selling tens of millions of copies and remaining in constant demand. Now The Secrets of Success, a one-of-a-kind anthology of achievement, reveals why they are every bit as inspiring as they were a century ago.

    susan says: "Meaty"
    "Waste of a credit"

The narration takes classics and turns them into boring information. Buy the books -- read them yourself -- the information is good, the delivery is awful.

  • The War Within: A Secret White House History 2006-2008

    • ABRIDGED (6 hrs and 24 mins)
    • By Bob Woodward
    • Narrated By Boyd Gaines

As violence in Iraq reaches unnerving levels in 2006, a second front in the war rages at the highest levels of the Bush administration. With unparalleled intimacy and detail, Bob Woodward takes listeners deep inside the tensions, secret debates, unofficial back channels, distrust, and determination within the White House, Pentagon, State Department, intelligence agencies, and U.S. military headquarters in Iraq.

    Shaun says: "Too condensed"
"The only investigative reporter in DC"

Provides a behind the scenes view of the Bush White House. Interesting to get first-hand reporting to learn how decisions are made. Not too surprising that the President failed to listen to his top advisers; refused to tell the truth to the public that his Iraq policy was a failure; and had a view of the war that is not is not based on reality. January 20, 2009 can't come soon enough.

  • Andrew Jackson: His Life and Times

    • ABRIDGED (8 hrs and 6 mins)
    • By H.W. Brands
    • Narrated By Chuck Montgomery

The most famous American of his time, Andrew Jackson is a seminal figure in American history. The first "common man" to rise to the presidency, Jackson embodied the spirit and the vision of the emerging American nation; the term "Jacksonian democracy" is embedded in our national lexicon. With the sweep, passion, and attention to detail that made The First American a Pulitzer Prize finalist, historian H.W. Brands shapes a historical narrative that's as fast-paced and compelling as the best fiction.

    Ken says: "Andrew Jackson"
    "Excellent choice"

A well-researched book with fascinating detail about a complex person, this is one of the better biographies available on I will also seek other books read by this narrator -- he did a great job of picking up the pace and therefore holding my interest. The only small weakness is toward the end of the book, when the author moved away from Jackson, focusing more on expansionism.

  • A Crack in the Edge of the World: America and the Great California Earthquake of 1906

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 30 mins)
    • By Simon Winchester
    • Narrated By Simon Winchester

The international best-selling author of The Professor and the Madman and Krakatoa vividly brings to life the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake that leveled a city symbolic of America's relentless western expansion. Simon Winchester has also fashioned an enthralling and informative look at the tumultuous subterranean world that produces earthquakes, the planet's most sudden and destructive force.

    Drayton says: "This Book Delivers"
    "A poor choice"

I've listened to several dozen books from -- and dozens of others. This is a dreadful book -- boring, slow, and read poorly. It is the only book I've ever stopped listening to. Don't waste your money, or credit, on this one.

  • This Just In: What I Couldn't Tell You on TV

    • UNABRIDGED (15 hrs and 8 mins)
    • By Bob Schieffer
    • Narrated By Bob Schieffer
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

This highly respected veteran newsman shares the stories he's long kept under wraps. Schieffer goes beyond the news everyone is familiar with to share the compelling anecdotes only his colleagues were previously privy to. Says the author, "I want to tell you about the parts that didn't get on television or in the paper." The result is an eye-opening glimpse behind the scenes of the news business.

    Richard says: "OUTSTANDING"
    "Great listen"

Packed with insight, and read by the author, this ia an outstanding listen. His no-nonsense news style comes through loud and clear.

  • The Partly Cloudy Patriot

    • UNABRIDGED (5 hrs and 16 mins)
    • By Sarah Vowell
    • Narrated By Sarah Vowell, Conan O'Brien, Seth Green, and others

Sarah Vowell travels through the American past and investigates the dusty, bumpy roads of her own life. Her essays confront a wide range of subjects, icons, and historical moments: Ike, Teddy Roosevelt, and Bill Clinton; Canadian Mounties and German Filmmakers; Tom Cruise and Buffy the Vampire Slayer; twins and nerds; the Gettysburg Address, the State of the Union, and George W. Bush's inauguration. The result is an engrossing audiobook, capturing Vowell's memorable wit and her keen social commentary.

    Erik says: "A great listen"
    "Too long"

This is a good two-hour book -- the problem is that after the second hour there are three more. Insight into politics is interesting, but who cares about Tom Cruise, twins, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer?

  • Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln

    • ABRIDGED (9 hrs and 29 mins)
    • By Doris Kearns Goodwin
    • Narrated By Doris Kearns Goodwin, Richard Thomas

We view the long, horrifying struggle from the vantage of the White House as Lincoln copes with incompetent generals, hostile congressmen, and his raucous cabinet. He overcomes these obstacles by winning the respect of his former competitors, and in the case of Seward, finds a loyal and crucial friend to see him through. This brilliant multiple biography is centered on Lincoln's mastery of men and how it shaped the most significant presidency in the nation's history.

Anders says: "wait for the unabridged version"
    "Good historical book"

The author does a great job of researching in-depth detail into Lincoln and those who he surrounded himself with. While strong with new information in the first half of the book, the second half contains information that an avid Lincoln fan already has read several times. A good "listen" nonetheless.
