Jack Ryan has only just moved back into the Oval Office when he is faced with a new international threat. An aborted coup in the People's Republic of China has left President Wei Zhen Lin with no choice but to agree with the expansionist policies of General Su Ke Quiang. They have declared the South China Sea a protectorate and are planning an invasion of Taiwan. The Ryan administration is determined to thwart China’s ambitions, but the stakes are dangerously high as a new breed of powerful Chinese anti-ship missiles endanger the US Navy's plans to protect the island.

    Story

This was the most intriguing Clancy novel in a long time. The very real threat of the Chinese, (see yesterday's headlines of Japan and China) and cyber warfare is as fascinating as it is threatening. No one researches better than Clancy and few know military operations and capabilities more than him.

Better still, the suspense in this novel is top rate, on the same level as his earlier novels. Lou Diamond Phillips is the perfect choice for this work. His characterizations are spot on.

In his recent works, Clancy has been criticized for his politics. This is not the case with this book at all.

Marnie Logan often feels like she's being watched: A warm breath on the back of her neck, or a shadow in the corner of her eye that vanishes when she turns her head. She has reason to be frightened. Her husband Daniel has inexplicably vanished, and the police have no leads in the case. Without proof of death or evidence of foul play, she can't access his bank accounts or his life insurance. Depressed and increasingly desperate, she seeks the help of clinical psychologist Joe O'Loughlin.

Robotham blew me away with Bombproof, a novel I will never forget, so I was determined to keep trying to find one similar. This one delivered on many accounts. It's well written, wonderfully performed, and features a superb mystery that kept me guessing all the way.

I admit I'm a sap for characters I can either identify with or admire. This features a great heroine, a crusty retired detective and of course Joe O'Laughlin. There's great synergy between the characters and the mystery itself.

    I flew threw this one....

A torso in a suitcase looks like an impossible case, but Sean Duffy isn’t easily deterred, especially when his floundering love life leaves him in need of a distraction. So with detective constables McCrabban and McBride, he goes to work identifying the victim. The torso turns out to be all that’s left of an American tourist who once served in the U.S. military. What was he doing in Northern Ireland in the midst of the 1982 Troubles?

    Story

This is a gritty series about a time when there was no good side of things. I love the fact that the hero, Sean Duffy, is Catholic working for the police. The conflicts this creates are as complicated and volatile as Belfast was in the troubles.

It's great police work mired in political intrigue. John DeLorian plays a central role in this one. I actually met him in 1984 or 5 after his fall. He was a broken man, but a good man.

The story flows and is fast moving. I'll never miss a McKinty novel and neither should you!

Liam Mulligan is as old school as a newspaper man gets. His beat is Providence, Rhode Island, and he knows every street and alley. He knows the priests and prostitutes, the cops and street thugs. He knows the mobsters and politicians--who are pretty much one and the same. Someone is systematically burning down the neighborhood Mulligan grew up in, people he knows and loves are perishing in the flames, and the public is on the verge of panic.

This is a Rhode Island story read with a New England swagger. I give it 3 stars, but really I enjoyed the book all the way through. It just smacked of too much corruption. Political corruption, moral corruption, media corruption, etcetera.

His gift has made him a rising star on Wall Street. This is the story of a somewhat immature and troubled young savant. He's a brilliant financial analyst with a genius for discovering patterns in the financial and political realms. The story opens with his discovery of an unprecedented series of financial attacks on the American economy.

The story moves fast with a great storyline and unforgettable characters. George Newbern is brilliant with a variety of distinct and believable voices.

Like Bombproof, this is a great suspense novel that I could not put down.
An easy 5 Stars all the way!

Jenna James’ life has been smooth-sailing since she left the high-powered law firm of Marbury Marfan. She’s happily ensconced as a professor at a prestigious law school, where she’s well liked by her students, coupled up with a handsome colleague, and on track for tenure. But things take a shocking turn one morning when a student, Primo, comes to Jenna’s office seeking her advice about a treasure map he recently inherited. When Primo turns up dead and Jenna is suddenly the prime suspect in a murder investigation, everyone turns on her.

And it wasn't the murder either. The first book in this series, Death On A High Floor, was clever, witty, had excellent courtroom intrigue, great characters and was brilliantly narrator. This one has not wit, no intrigue, is populated by miserable characters, (foremost the main character), and the narration is monotonous.

Jen is no longer the brilliant and funny protege, but a stodgy, hyper- sensitive law professor with no friends and no life. Robert is still a snob, but with no sense of humor. Oscar is the only saving grace.

    Don't bother with this one.

I'm giving this 5 stars for one of its two short stories. I think I've listened to Born Bad by Jeffrey Deaver 5 or 6 times. It's probably the best twist I've ever encountered in any mystery.

Now my version only had two stories and was cheap. It must be abridged. See if you can find Born Bad somewhere cheap, you won't regret it.
