"Well written, but too slow for me"
You might love this book if you like lots of character development and dialogue. I thought I liked character development, but after this book, I guess I realize that I don't.
This book was well written in my opinion. The story was good and the characters were believable. The world was developed. But for me, there was not enough tension in the plot. The character development was not enough to hold my interest. I was interested enough to keep listening, but I will not get the second book.
"Outstanding Book!! But not for me."
This book about two men who create a well read comic book hero is really about too men who go through unusual and challenging lives. For example, Joe is trained as an escape artist and is able to escape from the persecution of the Jews in a casket holding a statue disguised as a person. These childhood events shape the rest of these men's lives.
While this book is engaging and actually quite moving, it was too heavy for me. This was not the kind of escapism for me as it has too much pain and not enough fun or mystery. Not that this book was full of sorrow, there were some fun moments, like the excitement in creating their first comic book.
I am better off sticking with mystery, thrillers, sci-fi and fantasy. But I recommend this to anyone who likes books that build fascinating if slightly tortured characters. Too much like real life for me.
"Well written and performed - but not my favorite"
Overall - I just sort of enjoyed this book. I am glad I listened to it, but it is definitely just a so so book for me that I will never re-listen to. The story was easy to follow, and some creative and original ideas that I enjoyed and had pretty good characters. Some of the ideas and situations presented in this book will stick with me. This will be a classic book.
Trying to put a finger on what I didn't like - I guess I didn't identify with all of the feelings Katniss Everdeen expressed throughout the trilogy - I got tired of hearing about them. Also, I didn't buy into some of the ways in which people reacted to events or situations. In general, I probably would have enjoyed a shorter version of this trilogy.
The narrator's performance of this book was top notch. Carolyn McCormick was very easy to understand. Her voices were good enough to keep things clear. She seemed to be a little whiney at times, but that is how the book actually read.
As a side note, my wife liked this book a lot more than I did. I am not sure if this trilogy appeals to women more than men or not.
I hope you enjoy!
"A light coming of age, urban fantasy, mob book"
This book held my attention for its outstanding narration, light and interesting character and fun plot. I am more of a light book fan as I often multi-task while listening and this book was perfect for me.
The reader was outstanding, I enjoyed listening to Jesse Eisenberg read this to me.
The story itself was fun to listen to, it had some elements to figure out, an interesting plot and fun characters. But it was a slightly strange mix of a young character in a fun light story that turns into a killer in a somewhat mobbish violent story. Regardless, I enjoyed it and will get the next book.
"Hearne's Hexed is Incredibly Fun!"
As a reader of sci-fi, fantasy and thriller - and an appreciator of witty prose - Hexed is right up my ally. It easily ranks up there with Dresden Files for me.
My audible listening usually involved multi-tasking, so I like stories that I can follow but that keep me entertained and distracted from my chores or work-out. This one fits the bill quite nicely.
I only went 4 stars but could have gone 4.5 - there are books I love more, like Butcher's Codex Alera series, but this one is not far behind. It may catch up by the time I have listened to more of the series.
If the genre is of interest to you and you like fun and action packed stories, don't hesitate to buy this one.
"Fantastic Escape"
After listening to around 6 Grisham novels, I have yet to find one of his legal thrillers that I haven't enjoyed.
One reviewer complained about the narrater being breathy? I found the reader, Frank Muller to be top notch - I would seek him as a narrator again. He was dramatic in his reading and his characters were extremely distinct and consistent w/out being corny. They sounded like real characters.
The book is fairly typical for a Grisham book, which is fantastic. I guess what captures me is that someone is always finding a way to get rich and then hanging on the edge to find out if their scam will work or they will lose everything...
I love Grisham books and this was no exception to my rule.
"Well Written, Well Narrated, but ?????"
Gaiman writes very well, I had no trouble understanding the story. The dialogue was interesting and the reader was great. But I didn't enjoy this book.
Maybe I am dense and the story was over my head, but nothing grabbed me about this book. I was scratching my head most of the story kind of waiting for something to happen. If someone explained to me what specifically is good about the story itself, I would probably enjoy it a lot more.
"Great Story..Great Reader"
I seem to be drawn in to stories like this one, that are first person and focus in on the thoughts and actions of the main character. This story was bleak at times, but captured my interest. The main character is a killer that goes through horrible pain and hopes to find revenge.
The narrater was very good and easy to listen to. I recommend this story for those interested in stories about the mob.
"Enjoyable Invasion Story"
This was an excellent alien invasion story that doesn't go too far out. While it bordered a little too much on the violent side - bad things happen to some characters - and I didn't find a charcater to relate to, the story seemed real and made you think. Not my favorite, but I am glad I listened.
"Par for Patterson - Outstanding !!!"
Patterson is one of my favorite authors. I have listened to many books from Audible during the past couple of years, both fiction and non-fiction, and while some of the other books may be more sophisticated or get more stars from readers, Patterson is always the most enjoyable to me.
