  • Terra Incognita: A Novel of the Roman Empire

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 33 mins)
    • By Ruth Downie
    • Narrated By Simon Vance
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

The edge of the Roman Empire is a volatile place; the tribes of the North dwell near its borders. These hinterlands are the homeland of Gaius Petreius Ruso's slave, Tilla, who has scores of her own to settle there: Her tribespeople, under the leadership of the mysterious Stag Man, are fomenting a rebellion, and her former lover is implicated in the murder of a soldier. Ruso, once again pulled into a murder investigation, is appalled to find that Tilla is still spending time with the prime suspect.

    "Good sequel -- excellent narration"
If you could sum up Terra Incognita in three words, what would they be?

    decent sequel

What about Simon Vance???s performance did you like?

Simon Vance is an excellent narrator. His voices for each of the characters are pitch perfect--not too over the top but unique so that you know throughout the book who is speaking. I love his narration of these Ruth Downie books and it's why I intend to listen to all of them in order.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. Ruso and Tilla make an excellent romantic duo, but they are not together much in this book. Instead, Tilla is off doing her own thing. I found that a bit disappointing since the beauty of the earlier book was the romantic tension between the two.

This book has some moments where I felt Ruso was out of character. He questions a suspect to a murder by dunking the man's head in a barrel of water. Ruso it seems to me is supposed to be the hero of the story and better than that--he's a doctor and will not beat his slave when they disobey him. Aside from that this is an interesting murder mystery and the characters are believeable.

    Any additional comments?

I look forward to Persona Non Grata, the next book in the series. I'm very glad Simon Vance is narrating all four.

  • The Corinthian

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 21 mins)
    • By Georgette Heyer
    • Narrated By Georgina Sutton

The accomplished Corinthian Sir Richard Wyndham is wealthy, sophisticated, handsome ,and supremely bored. Tired of his aristocratic family constantly pressuring him to get married, he determines to run away after meeting the delightful, unconventional heroine Penelope Creed. Penelope - literally - falls into his life late one night as she hangs from the window of her aunt's house - she too attempting to escape the pressures of forced marriage.

Carol says: "Fun on the Run"
    "Good Clean Fun"
What did you love best about The Corinthian?

The relationship between the main characters is romantic and charming.

What other book might you compare The Corinthian to and why?

I would compare it to a Jane Austen book. Not quite as well written, but still worth listening to.

Which character – as performed by Georgina Sutton – was your favorite?

Lord Richard is my favorite character. He's a bit complex and still keeps his Corinthian veneer and uses it to his advantage.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I couldn't say without providing spoilers. There are a number of twists to the plot that kept me listening. It's a romance with a mystery.

    Any additional comments?

I've read a lot of complaints about books with sexually overt content. This book has none. I wouldn't mind it but if you are looking for good clean romance/adventure with no bad language or sexual situations (the worst swear in the book is 'The Devil!') this is a good book for you. Georgette Heyer is an accomplished writer; I wish she had not introduced so many different characters thoughout the book. A character appears late in the book for no reason except for the lead to have someone to talk to out loud. Otherwise they have NO purpose in the book. If you are looking for pure escape rather than fine literature, though, this is excellent and I really enjoy just relaxing and knitting while listening to Heyer's books.

  • Ready Player One

    • UNABRIDGED (15 hrs and 46 mins)
    • By Ernest Cline
    • Narrated By Wil Wheaton
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

At once wildly original and stuffed with irresistible nostalgia, Ready Player One is a spectacularly genre-busting, ambitious, and charming debut—part quest novel, part love story, and part virtual space opera set in a universe where spell-slinging mages battle giant Japanese robots, entire planets are inspired by Blade Runner, and flying DeLoreans achieve light speed.

Travis says: "ADD TO CART, POWER UP +10000"
    "LOVED it."
Would you consider the audio edition of Ready Player One to be better than the print version?

    Don't know.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Wade, the hero of the story, is a believable high school senior. The virtual world in which he

What does Wil Wheaton bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?

Wil Wheaton is the perfect narrator. He brings both the science fiction cred and high school young man to life in his reading.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I loved how Wade combined vehicles from the pop culture 1980s - Kit from KnightRider, the DeLorean from Back to the Future, the oscillation overthruster from Buckaroo Banzai, and of course the GhostBusters mobile. to make his virtual reality car.

    Any additional comments?

Warning for parents: While my 13 year-old-boy did like this book very much, sensitive parents should be aware that there are occasional obscenities in this book, just as there are in most high schools.

    • ORIGINAL (42 mins)
    • By Susie Bright

The Tea Party members are ready for battle to make sure that their far-right viewpoint is heard. Oh boy, let's brace ourselves for a return to some old-fashioned values - and we're not talking about being a good Pollyanna; we're talking about making sure Pollyanna doesn't speak up, get out of line, or have a differing opinion.

    "One of her best"

Susie is never so awesome as when she's merging the personal with the political. So many insights even I haddn't thought of, and thank God Susie never sugarcoats it. Highly recommended episode but then again I have subscribed for a couple years now and she never disappoints.
