A very entertaining trip of weird. The book is described as supernatural but I would say it has many sci-FY elements such as quantum physics, alien beings and parallel worlds. Mona is an ex police officer that has been wandering for a few years after losing her baby and divorce. She inherits a home that belonged to her mother (committed suicide when she was a child) and after finding some info in her dads storage that shows her mom happy and working in a lab feels a great desire to learn of her moms life. The home and lab are located in Wink New Mexico, unfortunately it is not on any map. I don't want to spoil the story so in short she finds Wink, a charming small town and weirdness ensues. People are strange nothing is what it seems including Mona. The book kept me riveted till the end. Narrator was great. If you like Stephan King, or early Dean Koontz you will enjoy the story.
I normally would not like a book put together like this. It is written as reading a book within a book and continually changes view points of multiple characters some significant and some just adding another small piece to the puzzle. The author with the help of some great narrators pulls this off well to make a smooth and highly interesting story. I don't want to say much to spoil the plot other than I had to listen straight through. The ending left me a little disappointed as I never really knew for sure what the kids were, it just gives you an idea of what they are but not an definitive answer. The narrators were excellent, they did so well that you could forget your listening to a book and just become immersed in it.
I took a chance on this book as it had no reviews yet and author was unknown to me, but the idea of parallel worlds intrigued me. The story is thought provoking with time travel, multiple worlds, time lines and paradoxes. The characters are saved from our world and thrust unto a whole new earth that is similar but different. They have each developed a super power that they gradually learn about, so if you are into reluctant super hero stories this book is for you. The narrator was great. My only problem is it appears to be the first of a series of books and I hate waiting, I want more now lol
I love the steampunk/victorian settings of this series for a nice change of pace in my fantasy reading. The book has it all murders, mystery, magic, clockwork devices, evil villains, romance and of course proper manners. I loved Sherlock Holmes appearances as Evalinas uncle and the interesting take on Jack The Ripper! The story has a great cast of characters which are easy to invest care for. The narrator was good except for one annoying voice for the blue king which was thankfully short. I eagerly await the next book A study In Ashes.
An excellent mystery that all though very slow moving draws you in and keeps going till the end. If I were to compare it to another book it would be Lovely Bones although the story is very different , the feel of it is very similar. It is the story of a 14 year old girl whos demon/ghost hunting parents are murdered. Follow as she struggles to come to terms with and piece together what happened on the night of their murder and deals with what she learns about her family in the process. Although not high action suspense I did not want to stop listening until I finished the book. I did not figure out the ending until it was revealed. The narrator did perfect portraying a 14 year old girl.
This book is fiction but could be pulled from todays headlines or events from the past. Just substitute ab-normals for ? and normals for the general public. It shows how people can be lead to fear and hatred by a few who crave power. The use and success of the media to shape peoples views was a bit too realistic. It is a story of a man who believes he is fighting for whats right but then an event that strikes him close to his heart ( daughter) leads him down a path to discover and learn that everything he believed to be true was lies. I had thought the book would be a super hero type but the Brilliants (abnormals, twist) are just regular humans with an extraordinary ability of the mind that sets them apart. The story is full of action and never has a dull moment, I listened to it almost straight through. The narrator was great.
This book was on my maybe list for a long time. I am very glad I finally gave it a listen. The story reminds me of a modern dungeons and dragons, full of action, beating impossible odds, a little romance, and lots of monsters! The trailer trash elves were funny and the orcs were cool! The narrator was awesome and really added to my enjoyment of the book! The great news is that there are more books in the series awaiting my next round of credits!
I was expecting more based on the reviews of this book. It kept me listening but....well it was just OK. Kate does good narrating for the most part but for some of the characters (i.e. Bing) she became very loud and annoying. I was listening on the speakers and family members heard and asked what horrible thing was i listening to. I guess the characters were supposed to be annoying but the only way I could get through the book was to keep turning the volume down during much of the book. I did not care for the ending of the book.
I purchased the 1st book in the series ( My Life as A White Trash Zombie) to take a break from the longer epic books I usually read. I immediately purchased this one after I finished it. It was fun and light as I expected but surprisingly Angel was a charming character that hooks her way into your heart. I liked the authors take on zombies and her concept of brains use (i.e. brain smoothies) and the zombie mafia. The narrator gives an excellent performance being animated without being over-bearing.
This book is more of a life story rather than an adventure. We follow Ursala through her lives and see the way she tries to change things for the better ( with only intuitive feelings of her past lives). Each life gets a little longer and she retains more of her past memories with them towards the end.
I really enjoyed the story all though it is not action packed. My only problem with the story is that is was often confusing as it jumped from life to life, I had to pay very close attention or re-listen often to figure out what was going on. It may be less confusing in written form. I was also left wondering at some of the changes in her lives that she did not cause such as the adoption of a certain baby, did someone else in her family also repeat lives and change things or was it just a random happening. The ending of the book left me a little disappointed as I am not sure what was done to keep someone alive and also the very last sentences of the book were about a person who only had a few words mentioned about them prior and I never really understood their part in the story at all. It may be that I missed something that I would have understood if I read the book. I think the narrator gave a good performance. Over all I would rate my enjoyment of the book a 4 to 5 star but my satisfaction at a 3.
