Do not listen to this until you have finished A Prayer For Owen Meany. The major suspenseful event of the book is told in the first few minutes of the review.I had listened for 20 hours and then decided to hear the interview and the idea that was just becoming clear to me was discussed in the interview. It didn't ruin this wonderful book but I wish I had been able to discover it in the book.
what a disappointment! I hate these neither gets the intense feeling each other have had for years. So unrealistic. Unbelievable situations...
Can't anyone say what they mean even a little at 20?also, too much gratuitous sex. A Virgin at 20 goes from zero to 100 in a night?
Unbelievable, hopefully a young adult book, well, actually not. My read: stupid!
If you like to have books read to you as if one is reading down a bullet list, this may be for you. What a disappointment. Of course, as many ,I have read Joy Luck Club and her subsequent novels but I was so utterly disappointed,I actually could not listen after Chapter 4. Maybe it needs a better chance, but I felt I was listening to a fourth grader's outline of a story.
There is no detailed description of Shang hai which is a given but no description of any characters inner thoughts, no inner thoughts on anything. i could not feel I was in the writers mind or imagination which toime is the whole magic of books. I was so bored and actually frustrated,I stopped and went back to a story I had already heard. It was that horrible.
I do not remember huge love of Tan's books after JLC but they were good.
Sorry to say, this is the first of over 200 books that I could not get through. Usually I feel, I paid for this ,I can listen. With this book,I could not even do that.
Total disappointment and a true waste of a credit! Beware.
I have read this series in English and the first few had not been translated. It was great to be able to read earlier stories if only to see the improvement in Jo Nesbo's development of character and depth of plot. Great idea to start at the beginning, as with any series, but standing alone this one is not his best.
I love this Kinsey series. I have waited for this book and was delighted to see it on Audible. I have been listening for about 8 months usually about a book a week. This mystery was so outdated it was almost impossible not to laugh at the silliness. Normally one can get by the fiction of the 80's and its lack of technology with a great plot and real thrill. This series is not read by me at least for great plot or amazing twists but rather for the main character herself and bumbling along with her.It just doesn't work anymore. It feels like A-Z was written thirty years ago and if she is to stay in the same decade, she has to at least gear up the interest level. I knew from the start what was going to happen, the narrator who is suppose to be a 38 y.o woman sounds eighty. I was bored and it seemed silly. It's time to update and actually give Kinsey a cell phone or add some thrills, bumps and twists to this dated bumper car.
I loved this book. It seems quirky at first but I grew to love the characters. Their feelings, conversations and the storyline drew me in. This is rare in audible readings.I am listening to it all again because it is a beautiful story of love, loss and missed opportunities. The 3 star performance rating is because I found the West Indies dialect, helpful to the story feeling authentic, was very hard for me to understand. I listen at night on an Ipod and the rewinding to catch phrases was a pain. Otherwise, a great selection.
