"I've been told that the entire continent of Antarctica groaned at the moment of my birth. The howl tore across glaciers, over mountains and deep into the ice. Everyone says so. Except for my father; all he heard was Mother's sobs. Not of pain, but of joy, so he says. Other than that, the only verifiable fact about the day I was born is that an iceberg the size of Los Angeles broke free from the ice shelf a few miles off the coast."

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Focus on the meat of the story

What was most disappointing about Jeremy Robinson’s story?

Overdoing the movie style Rocky scenes. (hero gets beaten to death and then miraculously gets up and beat the other guy)

    Any additional comments?

I bought the series and have no interest inlistening to the others.

Way too much mushy love stuff with too little story arc development.
Looks like this will drag on for a while still with very little progress it is ok to build anticipation, but you also have to create the illusion of moving forward and this is where the book fails.

Matt Hollis is the current wielder of the holy weapon, DÄMOREN. With it, he stalks and destroys demons. A secret society called the VALDUCANS has taken an interest in Matt's activities. They see him as a reckless rogue - little more than a "cowboy" corrupted by a monster - and a potential threat to their ancient order. As knights and their sentient weapons begin dying, Matt teams up with other hunters of his kind such as LUIZA, a woman with a conquistador blade; ALLAN, an Englishman with an Egyptian khopesh; MALCOLM, a voodoo priest with a sanctified machete; and TAKAIRA, a naginata-swinging Samurai.

I am not big on daemons and other creatures, but this is well told and kept me listening when I should have been working.
Looking forward to the next book

The performance was good with just enough "voices" without going over the top.
Also never whispered or yelled as so many performers do. (That is hard on the traveling man)

This book is very different from book 2 and serves as a prequel to Fey. It does not really answer any questions and just have too many plot errors to make it enjoyable.
I can recommend book 2 and you will not miss out at all by skipping this one.

It was a tremendous struggle to get through this audiobook. Books are supposed to be entertaining, not a struggle.

The overall story arc in itself is good and grips the imagination, but the endless monologs, self pitying and logic that just hurts your head is just too much.

Throw in on top of it the estrogen filled Molly arc and the book is just not worth the effort.

The biggest problem is the comic book "sound effects ".
It greatly detracted from the story, but maybe it was intentional?

We humans tend to get in our own way time and time again - whether it comes to not speaking up for ourselves, going back to bad romantic partners, our umpteenth diet, or engaging in any of a range of bad habits we just can’t seem to shake. In Rewire, renowned psychotherapist Richard O’Connor, PhD, reveals why our bad habits die so hard. We have two brains - one a thoughtful, conscious, deliberative self, and the other an automatic self that does most of the work without our attention.

I believe the story could have been so much better if there was more steampunk and less gushy stuff. Adding the performance of Kate to it make it unbearable.
I have been trying for three months to get through this book now but my ears hurt from all the yelling. Why Kate thinks it is OK to do that in an audiobook is beyond me. There are tons of examples on how to handle situations were the sutuation calls for it.
A couple of pointers to anyone performing a book: We use ear/headphones to listen. If you change your voice, ie yelling or wispering, it makes it difficult on the ear. There are other methods to handle those situation. Please research them. This is not a perfomance on a stage...

Loved the book. Good character building and decent world.
The magic system is not exactly ground breaking and the story of an orphan getting into his/her powers is very over used these days, but the story (journey) is still well told and an enjoyable journey.

I am a bit concerned about the multiple story arcs especially since a few are still unconnected by the end of book one

I cannot stand another WOT series.
Hopefully things will start to pan out in book two.

The first book in C.J.Cherryh's eponymous series, Foreigner begins an epic tale of the survivors of a lost spacecraft who crash-land on a planet inhabited by a hostile, sentient alien race. From its beginnings as a human-alien story of first contact, the Foreigner series has become a true science fiction odyssey, following a civilization from the age of steam through early space flight to confrontations with other alien species in distant sectors of space. It is the masterwork of a truly remarkable author.

Good opening that got the interests raised, but then there is just hour after hour of fluff that adds nothing to the arc. If the author would have dropped a crumb of a clue to the direction the story is going, but it is mostly a monologue about how stupid the protagonist is...
    No thank you.
