"Performance distracted from the overall enjoyment"
Serial murders coincide.
I was distracted by the different voices and the sound effects in the narration. I felt like they detracted from my enjoyment of the novel.
"Mostly entertaining"
I'm an archaeologist who worked summers as wrangler and does a lot of backpacking for fun. This book promised all three! The story was interesting and fast paced; it was fun to listen to. The sad thing is that the inaccuracies in archaeological work, horse behavior, and backpacking practices were so great that it really detracted from the story. I could tell that the authors had done a little research, but there were gross errors and inaccuracies that anyone who had put some real time in the research process (or who had let someone with experience give notes on the manuscript) could have easily put to rights. I was left rolling my eyes in places and laughing at inappropriate moments.
If you can appreciate the story as pure fiction and can sidestep the mistakes, this one's for you. Don't look for a serious treatment of archaeology!
