With the legends and lore of Ireland running through his blood, falconer Connor O’Dwyer is proud to call County Mayo home. It’s where his sister, Branna, lives and works, where his cousin, Iona, has found true love, and where his childhood friends form a circle that can’t be broken. A circle that is about to be stretched out of shape - by a long-awaited kiss. Meara Quinn is Branna’s best friend, a sister in all but blood. Her and Connor’s paths cross almost daily, as Connor takes tourists on hawk walks and Meara guides them on horseback across the lush countryside.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Narrator was horrid- book only so so obviously just a way to get to the next one but you don't get away unscathed as you have lost so many hours of your life. Don't get me wrong I love Nora Roberts but this one was the worst I have ever listened to.

What could Nora Roberts have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

combined it with the 1st and 3rd and be done with it.

Would you be willing to try another one of Alan Smyth’s performances?

    NO

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The 1st in the series was really good- I love her tales of Ireland and witchcraft- the characters were people you cared about but in this one it was a real stretch to try and engage

  • All the Great Prizes: The Life of John Hay, from Lincoln to Roosevelt

If Henry James or Edith Wharton had written a novel describing the accomplished and glamorous life and times of John Hay, it would have been thought implausible - a novelist’s fancy. Nevertheless, John Taliaferro’s brilliant biography captures the extraordinary life of Hay, one of the most amazing figures in American history, and restores him to his rightful place. John Hay was both witness and author of many of the most significant chapters in American history - from the birth of the Republican Party, the Civil War, and the Spanish-American War, to the prelude to the First World War.

What disappointed you about All the Great Prizes?

the author goes for uninteresting facts in a persons life and drugs you into unconsiouness with the telling. And the narrator need a new day job.

What do you think your next listen will be?

    Phone calls from heaven

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Joe Barrett?

    no one for this book

    Any additional comments?

I have tried this author twice now and will not make this mistake again. As the mother of an academic I realize the work that goes into a book like this and I feel badly he does not seem able to bring the person of interest to life for the reader- People won't learn from a badly presented story. It's a shame really because the author chooses his subjects well and I would really like to be able to stick with it.

When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early 40s, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.... Pagford is not what it at first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town's council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen.

What disappointed you about The Casual Vacancy?

I did not like any of the characters or care about their problems. I kept listening because it was JK Rowling but I give up . I'm too old to waste anymore time with people I don't want to spend time with.

Has The Casual Vacancy turned you off from other books in this genre?

What genre? ?part of the problem?

Did Tom Hollander do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

yes I felt bad for him having to read this.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Anger because I did not care for these people and I kept listening hoping for it to change.
