B.J. says: "Good, but with reservations"
    "Realistic, reflective and thought provoking!"

I loved this book! I too found it sad, but as an African-American I was not surprised by the mentality, cruelty and realistic portrait the author painted of the institution of Slavery. The book Wench was a walk in the park compared to the hardships, atrocities and inhumane treatment this family faces and endures. I could NOT put it down! I would recommend it to anyone who wants to walk in the shoes of a slave for at least 12 hours and 55 minutes. I guarantee, you will never be the same.

  • Wench: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 22 mins)
    • By Dolen Perkins-Valdez
    • Narrated By Quincy Tyler Bernstine
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Tawawa House in many respects is like any other American resort before the Civil War. Situated in Ohio, this idyllic retreat is particularly nice in the summer when the Southern humidity is too much to bear. The main building, with its luxurious finishes, is loftier than the white cottages that flank it, but the smaller structures are better positioned to catch any breeze that may come off the pond. And they provide more privacy, which best suits the needs of the Southern white men who vacation there every summer.

Donna says: "Fascinating and disturbing, an amazing debut..."
    "An explosive ride!"

I am an avid reader and audile listener, I found this book reviting, moving, and explosive! I would highly recommend this book to any reader interested in learning about the history of this country and seeking a realistic look into slavery. I was left speechless!
