  • How to Watch TV News

    • UNABRIDGED (4 hrs and 30 mins)
    • By Neil Postman, Steve Powers
    • Narrated By Jeff Riggenbach

America is suffering from an information glut. Most Americans are no longer clear about what news is worth remembering or how any of it connects to anything else. Thus, Americans are rapidly becoming the least knowledgeable people in the industrial world. Author and academic Neil Postman and television journalist Steve Powers tell you how to become a discerning viewer.

The book is ten years old although the audio format was released recently. Since this is a book on contemporary journalistic trends and corporate influences on the news, its age renders it obsolete.

  • Native Tongue

    • UNABRIDGED (15 hrs and 57 mins)
    • By Carl Hiaasen
    • Narrated By George Wilson

Ex-reporter Joe Winder had been working in the public relations department of a sleazy family entertainment park, The Amazing Kingdom of Thrills, when he chanced upon a news-breaking story inspired by the disappearance of two blue-tongued voles and the bizarre death of Orky, the killer whale.

This is one of his earlier works but it stands the test of time and demonstrates true Hiassen genius. Well worth a credit (or even real money!)

  • How to Survive a Robot Uprising: Tips on Defending Yourself Against the Coming Rebellion

    • UNABRIDGED (3 hrs and 7 mins)
    • By Daniel H. Wilson
    • Narrated By Stefan Rudnicki

How do you spot a robot mimicking a human? How do you recognize and deactivate a rebel servant robot? How do you escape a murderous "smart" house, or evade a swarm of marauding robotic flies? In this dryly hilarious survival guide, roboticist Daniel H. Wilson teaches worried humans the secrets to quashing a robot mutiny.

    "Good, not great"

This is a none-to-subtle rip off of The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks, which I cannot recommend highly enough (see also World War Z).

That being said, it's well-read, well-written, and successfully sneaks interesting information about robotics to the listener.

Darby McCormick had known Melanie Cruz and Stacey Stephens forever. Best friends since childhood, the threesome had survived high school together. But one night in the woods, drinking beers to celebrate Melanie's 16th birthday, the three unsuspecting teenagers witnessed the grisly murder of a woman. Darby and her friends fled the scene, but they left behind a clue to their whereabouts, which only simplified the killer's revenge. It didn't take long to find them. This time, only Darby survived.

I was looking for a tidy little thriller for entertainment and found a gem. It's a fast paced listen and, while I guessed the "bad guy" fairly early on, it still had plenty of twists and turns that made it entertaining to the very end. I particularly liked that there was a minimum of "soap opera" tangents into the personal lives of the characters.

I was disappointed that there are no other Chris Mooney titles to go to next but when there are, I'll be giving them a listen too.
