After their parents divorced in the 1970s, Andre Dubus III and his three siblings grew up with their exhausted working mother in a depressed Massachusetts mill town saturated with drugs and crime. To protect himself and those he loved from street violence, Andre learned to use his fists so well that he was even scared of himself. He was on a fast track to getting killed—or killing someone else—or to beatings-for-pay as a boxer.

How could the performance have been better?

The book is interesting. It is a memoir without intrigue and cohesive story.
The narrator is awful: steady soporific voice hypnotizes. Be careful listening this book in the car - extremely dangerous. Read this book it is safer.

One hundred years before Ender's Game, the aliens arrived on Earth with fire and death. Earth Afire by Orson Scott Card and Aaron Johnston is the story of the First Formic War. Victor Delgado beat the alien ship to Earth, but just barely. Not soon enough to convince skeptical governments that there was a threat. They didn’t believe that until space stations and ships and colonies went up in sudden flame. And when that happened, only Mazer Rackham and the Mobile Operations Police could move fast enough to meet the threat.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

    Any additional comments?

There is a missing part 3 in this book. The story abruptly ends after the second part. And it is not the type of ending that props the reader / listener to think of the outcome. No, the narrative just stops literary in middle of the sentence. I understand that Mr. Card is working hard against deadline (that probably explains differences in the literary quality between his books) but he should not publish unfinished book.
I am a big fan of Ender's series and consider Mr.Card as one of the most significant thinkers. So I am disappointed and awaiting part 3 of "Earth Afire"
